I'm just curious about this--neighbors have 2 Airedales behind an invisible fence, which they had to move further from the road because the dogs crossed the fence and ran out to the road to challenge us (us means me, my husband, and our 3 dogs). It is so much better for us now because the dogs are far enough away that Henry doesn't get so freaked out, and he's learned to walk peacefully by. Yay! The dogs have stayed inside their fence so far, too. But I notice that they get shocked a lot because they are used to the boundary being out further. Do you think this is going to end up creating a negative association (and eventually more agression) towards passers by?
The owner said she was going to move the fence and increase the intensity of the shock when she learned that her dogs had been crossing the boundary, so I guess the shock is stronger in addition to the boundary change. It's creepy, the dogs literally jump back when they get the shock. I'm not sure if she put out the little flags when she first made the change or not because we didn't walk that way for a few months. |

A friend of mine had one of those fences, and one day when I drove by her house, her dog was on the other side of it. I tried to get him to cross back over with the collar on, and he didn't want to cross back. Duh on me. So I took it off, and as we crossed back over, the collar SHOCKED ME... it was SO PAINFUL, I couldn't believe it! My finger went numb!!!!!!!
I refuse to use an electric fence, and I'm pretty hesitant to let my fosters go to homes that use electric fences. My friend's dog was a 75 pound yellow lab. I hate to think of what kind of pain it would cause a little 15 pound Rattie! |

Hmmm. Now I'm questioning my decision to put one out front. Of course, we were ONLY going to use it as a safeguard in case Pixie ever bolts out the door again. When we take her out, she's always on a leash and would continue to be, even if we get the invisible fence. You pose a good question... |

Well, Tabitha, I'll be honest with you--I don't like it when the invisible fences are out front instead of in the back (actually, I don't like these fences much at all), mostly because I bicycle and some dogs find chasing a bicycle irresistible. I was bitten on the ankle by a dog that was behind an invisible fence while cycling on the street by his front yard. This was because a car needed to pass, and I had to get a little too close to his yard for his comfort (his boundary was right at the street). He crossed over, chased me, and nipped my ankle. This dog was never supervised, however. He was always out by himself. So, invisible fences are nerve-wracking to me as the person who has to walk or bike by the dog that's out in his front yard and isn't obviously contained (hard to tell if there's an invisible fence a lot of times). If you do decide to go with an invisible fence in front, consider making the boundary several feet away from the sidewalk or street. Sue, that's disheartening (not about your hesitancy, but about the strength of the shock). I haven't walked by the Airedales since I noticed the obvious shock they were getting. I don't really understand why the dogs are kept out front. These folks have several acres of land, and passers by, especially with dogs, seem to drive their dogs crazy. They bark and lunge, etc. One of their kids told me a delivery man was unable to make a delivery to the house, so now they have this sign out front directing that deliveries be made next door (which I think is the grandparent's house). They also have horses, so maybe that's why the dogs can't go out back. Anyway, I really feel like I have to let it go and accept that this is their problem. They did move the boundary back further from the street, so our walks have become so much more relaxed and fun. |

| There are lots of dogs on our block with the invisible fences, and some are so conditioned that they no longer wear the collar. Our reasoning for not getting one is that while it would keep Lacey in the yard, it wouldn't keep other dogs out. So all of Lacey's outside time is supervised by us, and she stays in our yard 99.9% of the time, with an occasional foray to the neighbors yard to tree a squirrel. All the dogs behind the electric fences will rush and bark. We've been fortunate that we can control Lacey with simple voice command, and dogs, people, kids on bikes, etc go by and she just sits next to us and watches, unless we release her to visit with permission. |

We use a fence and I love it. The boys do not even go near the line. My choice was to keep them tied up all them time or go this route as a real fence would have cost me over 7000.00!! I had bolters before the fence, now Jack could be out without the collar even on. I guess it is a personal choice and it depends on the dog. We also have the little dog collars which are specifically designed for small dogs and all collars come with a tone only correction. Sue, just a question. Don't you use the electric bark collars? They shock the same way. |

They're not electronic shock bark collars, Sarah - they're citronella spray collars... when the dogs bark, it spurts out a spray of citronella, no shocking involved... Too bad they couldn't do the same thing for electric fences... |

| I use an invisible fence and I love it. I have Max's collar set to the second lowest setting there is. He has been shocked by it twice, at the very beginning. He was not knocked off his feet or made to jump straight back. It was just enough that he cried out and moved back into safe territory. I have even used it on my toy poodle and when he would get shocked (he's a little more hard headed than Max) he didn't even cry out, he just moved back and barred his teeth. Max is conditioned enough that I only have to put the collar on him occasionally. He won't even come to me when I call him and have a piece of cheese (his favorite) in my hand if I am outside of his boundry. I have seen him chase birds/butterflies/rabbits and he will stop dead in his tracks before he gets to his boundry. I think that an invisible fence is like all other training aids, it is great when used correctly, but horrible when abused and misused. |
