I've been getting mixed messages. Some people tell me that we can't compete because they aren't recognized, others say we can. What's the real scoop? The reason I ask is that I started doing agility with Josie for fun and she really has a knack for it.

She's absolutely fearless, loves all of the equipment (you can't get her off and she grins the whole time) and she runs the course full sprint.  This was just supposed to be fun for us, but now the trainers are starting to get pushy about competing.

Don't let ANYone "push" you into competing, ok? That needs to be YOUR decision...

If you wish to compete, you can do so by getting your rat terrier PAL'd (used to be called ILP'd) through the AKC so your dog can compete in AKC agility trials. Go to www.akc.org ... it will explain the process for you. Bailey is ILP'd thru the AKC and we compete in AKC agility trials. http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

You can compete in other club trials, such as USDAA or NADAC and not have to have your dog PAL'd thru the AKC at all. These clubs allow mixed breeds to compete -- the AKC doesn't.

Remember that agility is not just about the equipment. The jumpers courses have no equipment. Many dogs do well on the contact equipment but don't do nearly as well on the jumpers courses. If this is something you wish to pursue with Josie -- go for it. It's loads of fun. But it's also a lot of hard work and it's an expensive sport which may or may not matter to you.

What area of the U.S. are you in?

I see you are in New Jersey (should have looked in your bio before I asked... sorry).
Thought maybe you might be closer to Tennessee... obviously not.

Bottomline in answer to your question is -- YES! You can definitely compete in agility with Josie if you want to. In AKC, USDAA or NADAC trials. (take your pick!) LOL

Thanks for the response. I've been crazy busy at work.

That's great to know. I'll definately look into the AKC. I think I'm starting feel the bite of the agility bug. It's so much fun to do it with her and she absolutely loves it.
