I went away to visit my grandparents this weekend and I got a text from Jason saying that Pixie was in heat. Ugh. When the vet checked her out, there's a place on her belly that looks to be a small scar. She said it didn't look exactly like a scar from being spayed, but it was certainly possible that it could be. The plan was to wait and see.
I waited. Now I see.  She's wearing ridiculous looking polka dot and pink gingham doggie diapers (that won't stay on...) since I couldn't find a pair of dog panties small enough. Plus, I didn't figure I'd need reusable panties since she shouldn't be going into heat again after this.
I just needed to whine and to say..."Ugh.' |

| Sorry Tabitha it happens sometimes. I had a girl come through rescue once with a very clear scar - vet said probably spay scar. She went into heat so we decided it must have been a c-section scar instead. That's when I learned that even altered boys can 'tie' to a female !! Boy was I surprised (both that she was unaltered and that my boys were still so interested etc). |

I'm glad to know my vet isn't nuts after all  Thank you!! It never occurred to me that it could have been a c-section!! With Pixie having carrot babies last week (and a PMS-y attitude which I couldn't figure out), its all making sense now. I bet she's had some pups in the past.
I knew that altered boys could tie to females...our choc. lab was neutered and our yellow lab is spayed. She got some sort of infection once that made her smell like she was in season. It was mount city out in the yard until her infection went away!! It was weird to watch...he kept mounting the wrong end. Poor Dutch didn't have a clue what to do!! We felt bad for Satchel, so we chased him away when we noticed him being around her, LOL. |

| Sometimes clinics and shelters do a tattoo when they spay so there is no question. it seems sorta 'cattle prod" like but i guess it makes sense. |

Yeah...it was one of the stranger things I've ever seen, that's for sure. I didn't know he was that dumb, LOL.  She was turning circles so he'd get the hint, but poor old Dutch never did.  He just kept going around in circles with her...

oopps!  she could have had an intestinal blockage before you got her...Rosie (not spayed) had to have a rock removed from her intestines when she was a pup, and her scar looks just like a spay scar. |

Intestinal blockage is also a VERY viable option...said the Mom of the 6 pound rat terrier who ate her way out of a kennel......
And Vickie, my grandmother's cats have itty bitty tattoos from their altering surgery. I definitely think its a great idea. They are such tiny marks there's no way it caused them any discomfort, especially since they were alseep anyway when they got inked. At least if they're ever found by someone and they can't find their way back home (like Pix), the new Mom and Dad know what's going on with the...internal stuff
Its OK though. Its one heat. Definitely an inconvenience, but I always knew it was a possibility. I just hoped it was already done. Its not the end of the world that it isn't. I just HATE having it done because they're so sore afterward. I always feel horrible for them and there's not one thing I can do to make it any better. Poor Kozmo (min pin) shook for 24 hours afterward after he lost his "neuters." It was nothing but a pain response, but I sat and held him, and cried the majority of the time. Occasionally he'd whimper and THAT really broke my heart. Better to have it done than not done, though. It wasn't without any lasting effect, though, LOL. When you scratched his tummy, if you got too close to his Mr. Peabody, he'd start growling at you and showing his teeth. I guess he thought he was going to lose that, too!! After a while, all we had to do was say "Peabody!" and he'd show his teeth at us, LOL.
.....I could just figure out how to keep these flippin' diapers on her, I'd be doing OK! She doesn't chew them off....they fall off!! And they seem to fit perfectly. That's my delimma. I haven't a clue what to do! She walks and they just fall off. This one is taped on, LOL. I guess I could sew her a little cloth diaper if I can't figure these beasts out.
