I was looking up all the reason why pups may eat poo...the only one that seems to apply is that right now he isnt getting as much food as he used to which is why it may seem to have increased lately.... We feed him Natural Balance VEnison and Sweet Potato so hes getting good food..... |

I am dealing with the same issue myself. From what I can tell the dogs that eat to fast don't get the nutritional value and/or feel full and then eat the poop because it has undigested food for them to eat. Yum, right?! So what I have been doing is getting him to eat slower by scatter feeding, hand feeding or you can put an object in their bowl like a ball for them to work around. They make special bowls for this, but I am not willing to make the purchase. Its me or the dog also recommended giving them a piece of pineapple so when the poop comes out its not appealing. I hope this is helpful. |

Mary, Didn't you alter Toa's diet recently. DiD the poop eating start before or after that. Maybe its realted, I don't know why but it could be. I think there is some sort of medicine the vet can give him to make him stop eating poop. I don;t know if it only stops him from eating his poop, or if it stops him from eating poop in general, but it might be worth asking. Don't feel bad about Toa being a nasty boy. The other day, Ricky accidentally left his Cane's chicken finger box on the table with one chicken finger left and CoCo got it and gobbled it down. Well, before she could digest it, she threw it up and guess who was right there to redigest it for her... Angus. I couldn't react fast enough... YUCK. Boy dogs are gross....lol |

| We pick up poop immediately unless it's raining. When the Peanut got here he was SO sick and I didn't want anyone getting anything (that boy had everything, giardia, cocicidia, every worm under the sun, kennel cough etc). So I got in the habit then and just kept it up. Makes for a much nicer yard too and no poop eating by the one who likes to do that. I also am out watching when it's time to go so that I can stop any bad behavior. |

that makes sense..... Indy is doing the same thing too.... ewwwwww.... I was thinking of somehow to slow down his eating. If i fed him anymore, he'll be fat. He just scarfs them down like i don't feed him at all.... and my Kasey and my foster Rosie don't eat like that and they seem so content with their food. and if Kasey is done with his food and some left over, Indy will go over and eat the rest of his food.
I'll have to try to feed all the dogs the pineapple.... how much should I give them? Rosie weighs 10 lbs. , Kasey weighs 15, and Indy weighs 22..... |

Toa doesnt even chew....is there anything I can do to get him to chew his kibble? I wet his food down at night...does this help him digest? This morning...I fed him out of my hand one piece at a time...he was fine with it and it took alot longer...but he still didnt chew...Trixi breaks up every peice of kibble.... this morning on the walk, Toa didnt eat any poo, but I kept a close eye! Maybe he felt more full after taking longer to eat....who knows...i just know its NASTY! |

Wulfie eats very fast, too. Actually, so does Morgandy....maybe something to do with being in the pound and not getting enough? Wulfie actually jumped in a food bowl last night and scattered the food across the floor....he ate that slower but basically still vacummed it up quickly.
I saw one of those special food bowls at PetSmart...divided into several smaller compartments so the dog has to slow down and search out the food. Looked like a good idea. |

I remember seeing a bowl on here somewhere to make your dog slow down to eat. It has 3 pegs, built into the middle to make the dog take longer to get his food, so he eats slower. I think it is called, " brakefast", or "break fast". It is blue.

| LOL. I have 2 poop eaters here. Neither ever did except as a pup then Jack started for some reason and Jeter now too. UGH it is sooo gross. I just physically can't be there every single time to pick it up immediately. They seem to like it better when it sits in the sun for a while anyways! LOL So I just try to think how much less poop I have to pick up... heehee. I was going to try the pineapple or some of the store bought stuff though to see if it helps. |

| I almost forgot..Mine like to try to sneak "Kitty Krunchies", from the cat litter box...Yuck! Mine get the most expensive food too. I think it is just a dog thing...When we used to let our pups out into the front yard to go poop, we had a gopher turtle, that would come from across the street from the empty lot, and eat the poo. It was funny. I wondered where the poo was going, and caught him one day doing it. Ever since they started going out back, in the fenced area, I have not seen what eats it. It still disappears. I think the critters, like squirrels, and birds are eating it. I did have a gopher turtle trying to dig under the backyard fence a couple of weeks ago. My husband filled in the hole, while he was gone. I have not looked lately, I don't think he redug it. |

I'd kinda agree with not enough on the plate theory. Didn't you say you cut him back to 1/4 cup each feeding? That's hardly more than a couple of spoonfuls. Even with the speed eating tournaments we have here, no one is eating that other "stuff". I'm pretty sure Cameo would feel half-starved on a 1/4 cup. BTW...anyone been to survival training? |

I'm glad Cooper isn't a poo eater, but he's definitely a PUKE eater. If one of our other dogs spits something up, he's right there to clean up their mess. I usually have to put him in his crate so I can clean up the mess. Then, after cleaning it up, I have to spray the bitter apple stuff on the carpet, otherwise he'll lick the spot for hours.
If you're looking for another way to slow Toa's eating down, I'm not entirely sure why this worked, but I was able to slow down my puppy's eating speed by making him work for his food. He has to sit or lie down until I tell him to "go get it!" Before I did this, he would eat the food before it even touched the bottom of the bowl and he would shake when I would get the food out of the closet! |

responding to: "does poop eating hurt them in any way?" I think dogs can pick up worms this way- so yes it can be harmful in that respect. After reading everyone's posts, I now think I understand why Bonnie is eating pooh. When she first came to me she would inhale her food, she's slowed down a little now that I got the Brake-fast bowl (a little), but when we go for walks she tries like crazy to find pooh in the grass to eat. Drives me nuts, And since I never know what she has in her mouth until I fish it out- I sometimes end up with pooh on my finger!!! ICK!!. I was thinking yesterday I need one of those finger condoms for when we go for wallk. Thank goodness she doesn't want to eat Chloe's pooh because even though I'm pretty dang good about getting it up right away there are times when I just can't. I think I need to try a different method of feeding her to see if I can slow down her eating habbits some more. My Chloe likes to eat goose pooh- but I think that is for an entirely different reason- she doesn't eat any other kind of pooh- just goose. Maybe it tastes good- lol! (but she eat's normally- so again- entirely different reason that Bonnie's. So glad I read all this after lunch and not before!!! |

Aghhhhhhh....I'll NEVER forget the time our yellow lab, Satchel, stood behind Kozmo, the min pin, as he pooped and ate the crap before it ever even hit the ground - directly from the source. What's worse is that it was so freaking cold that it sort of STEAMED as it came out of his rear. I don't think I'd wanted to die more. We finally got some stuff from the vet to sprinkle everyone's food for about a month to make it taste bad and that seemed to fix the problem. She hasn't eaten poo since, and that was several years ago; heck, Kozmo's been gone since October 2004, and it happened a few years before that. |

CRAP !#@$#@%@#!!!!! AT THE NO EDIT!! The vet said that in our case, she probably just LIKED the way the poo tasted, which he said is the case with most of them. So the stuff just made the poo taste rancid....it didn't mess up their stomachs or anything and the poo didn't smell any different and the consistancy was also the same. I was scared it would mess tummies up, but it was an unfounded fear |
