Slept all the way to 7:52 ÅM! For us that's sleeping in.

We have a guy coming in to help me do some flooring work in the laundry room. When we built this house, we wanted to be oh so ecological so we bought a low water usage Swedish washer that never got the clothes quite clean, low wattage envirofriendly matching Swedish dryer that never got the clothes quite dry (true bonus for preventing species loss in molds) both of which routinely burned out their motors (the washer burned out again two weeks ago). Each burn out led to a visit from the friendly appliance technician who charged $75 just to show his smiling face, plus labor plus parts. In one case, we needed him to clean out a trap that was hidden in the bottom of the dryer; these traps are reachable from the front and user friendly in the vast majority of dryers. On top of that, the laundry set was small, so we had to keep them going constantly. It took the washer 2 hours to do a load (1/2 a regular load) of whites.

We also got a pair of New Zealand dish washer drawers that needed to be loaded just so and burned out anyway (luckily under warranty so we got the second generation which actually work and get the dishes mostly clean most of the time). I actually do sort of like these, they come in handy when we entertain once every six months. We load the top drawer and run it as we finish up the first courses, then have the stuff ready by the time dessert comes around, while we have actually cleaned up the last course and loaded those dishes in the bottom dish washing drawer.

ENOUGH!!! I banged out the shelf on which the Swedish perils were sitting, we went to Best Buy, bought a full sized washer and dryer, and now have to tile or linoleum over the area where the little shelf on which the two pieces of EuroTrash used to sit. I'm tired of being a victim. Best Buy has a recycling program for used appliances. I asked that ours be sent to the reef project at the mouth of Stockholm harbor. That way the cold water crustaceans will have somewhere to live, and if we dump enough of their crappy washers and dryers at the mouth of the harbor they won't be able to ship any more of them to us.

Just read what I wrote this morning. I must have forgotten to take my lithium or something. Maybe I'll go to Ikea and get some Swedish meatballs.

OMG, LOL. In lieu of Swedish and Kiwi appliances, I'll just go for the Energy Star ones, LOL, and much to my husband's dismay. He'd buy the cheapest junk out there...but I always tell him, "You're not the one using it, so stuff it." I am dying for a high-effeciency washer and dryer (red please!), but these will have to die first, and I don't see that happening any time soon.
If you want to save water on the rinse cycle of your new set, try using soap nuts You can wash, skip the rinse cycle, and immediately hang out to dry (or use the dryer, but I always hang my stuff out if I can).

Oh Dan! Well, at least you are getting it taken care of and will be able to do laundry every few days instead of constantly! I swear.....sometimes we "pay" for trying to be ecologically minded..... Hang in there! I'm sure it will look great and operate efficiently when its done.

Gee, that Swedish washer sound like the one my brother-in-law had when he lived in Latvia.  The landlady bragged about what the great "Russian" washer in his apt.  and how it only took "two hours" to do a load of clothes.  I guess Sweds don't do much laundry.  I think they just air their clothes out in the typical European fashion.  (No offense meant to the Sweds as I am half Swedish.)

We'll have to outwit the fiend with our superior intelligence.

I remember the days of the great Soviet Technology. They invented the pocket calculator, it fit on the back of a VW bug. We got talked into it. I am a biologist, I do pay attention, but I should know better than to listen to builders, politicians, and salesmen when it comes to eco stuff. I still laugh at the toilet flush regulations. 1.5 gals. per flush. So you end up flushing 3 times and it wastes more water than if you just popped 5 gallons and got the job done. These nasty things probably did save some water in the long run, but the pure waste of having to just run load after load after load coupled with the probably waste of energy. Sheesh. As I said, I think that we're all ecovictims.

I was going to say something about low-flow toilets in my reply, but I forgot. I'm all about saving water...but low-flow toilets are a joke. When I have to flush THREE times to get a 4 year olds tiny poo ALL down, something's amiss. I'm wasting more water than I'd waste with an old-school toilet. I want the giant toilet back. End of story.

Dan, a couple of years ago my husband spent 3 months in the Netherlands for a work project. Anyhow, the apartment he stayed in during this project had a washer/dryer combo.....all in one! He said it was the freakiest thing......the washer took forever and then you switched it over to be a "dryer" which he said only steamed your clothes...didn't dry them at all.....so he to the point where he just hung his stuff out on his balcony!!

My MIL has one of these in her camper.  Its the scourge of the Earth, IMO (though I've never used it, I'm still positive it is).  She loves it, though.

I had a compact ventless washer/dryer combo in my dumpy apartment when I lived in Connecticut.  It was convenient, just hook it up to the kitchen sink faucet.  It did take 5 or 6 hours to do a small load, (mostly the drying process, which used cold water) but it sure beat lugging my dirty crap down 3 flights of stairs and hoping that a washer was available.  I'd never buy another one but it did serve its purpose for the two years I lived there.

Actually, my mother has an Italian-made all-in-one washer dryer combo. It works great - if you only need to wash 3 pairs of socks, have 2 hours to wait until the wash cycles are done and another 3 hours until they are dried to the point of moldy dampness, and if you don't mind that the dang thing never drains quite right and floods the floor periodically. Where do they come off selling this kind of crap? I hear that the new LG version of this is not quite as bad, but I haven't read that it's particularly good either.

If space is an issue, I'd rather have those small, stacking washer and dryers. Knock on wood, I'm still using a 22 year old dryer.

WHAT?!  My drier died a year ago.  It wasn't even 3 years old.  I now detest ALL Kenmore appliances, LOL.

I bought a Whirpool to replace it, but I didn't consider the fact that not all dryers come with an alarm you can turn off.  I just assumed it was a standart feature.  It isn't, and mine goes off 3 times with each cycle.  We bought the dryer, and the next day, I already had Jason outside stringing up a clothesline, LOL!!!  That buzzer drives me crazy!

I've got to get off here.  I've got laundry to do.

They don't make them like they used to. I think the only reason that we get tired of hearing it is because it's true.
