Hubby cut her one of her nails too short and I noticed blood all over the tile floor and we thought it was the evil chihuahua because she has black nails and we had to trim all of them - we only trimmed a couple of Daisey's. Anyway, eventually we figured it out and kept trying and trying to stop the bleeding. Jerry got one of those stick things he keeps for shaving mishaps and even with that it was a good 30 minutes. I was freaking out and just wanted to take her to the emergency vet but Hubby was positive this would help and be faster than us getting dressed and getting her to the vet. It sure hasn't been a quiet Sunday evening around here!
After we got it stopped she and I snuggled in the big comfy chair & ottoman with bed pillows and quilt. She layed on me and went to sleep with her head on my chest and I rubbed her belly and listed to her breathing while reading my book and listening to Mozart. It was a very comfortable 30 minutes of keeping her calm and off the foot - just in case.
Now she wants to lick it and I don't blame her because it is black and caked with dried blood. Hub says not to wash it because it has that stuff on it. Finally I resorted to putting a dog bootie on her foot. She was walkkng wierd on it anyway so the boot really hasn't changed that much.
Now she's awfully quiet and napping again. I am working myself up thinking that she's lost too much blood and is weak. HUbby's in bed soI guess I am getting paranoid. I worry so about sweet Daisey.

Vickie! She didn't loose enough blood from her nail to make her 'weak'. Yes, I'm sure it hurts her. (probably hurts you more) By tomorrow she will be fine, and so will you!!! |

| Thanks Debra. When it comes to Daisey I am a nervous Nellie. I was considering going to the grocery store and getting her some red meat. I'm such a reasonable person but with Miss Daisey I just worry too much I guess. |

Vicki, I know what you mean I am a huge worrierover Sydney. Not so much Sonic cuz he is a big boy. She probably did not lose to much blood more then likely tired out because of the stress of it and she knew you were upset. Sonic said to give her a big hug and he knows what it is like to have to wear that boot on her foot. |

poor baby! I bet that was scary. In case it ever happens again, dip her nail in corn starch, or into a bar of soap...I've never needed to use these personally yet, but it's good to know if/when it comes up. |

I know, it sounds crazy but the thought ran through my mind that perhaps she will be anemic and if I could fix her a steak it might help. See how out of my mind I am over this? I had already planned that since it is so late I would go to a 24 hour store like Super Target and if they don't have anything decent I could stop at Sam Seltzer's Steak House and order a porterhouse to-go (that's the big one, right?) and extra rare. I think I need a valium.

I think I might still have a box of cornstarch from when I used to cook French - used it for glazes and sauces. That's good to know. I can see how it would work because it can turn water into concrete! |

| So sorry you had such a scare. The amount of blood was probably minimal, but even a drop seems too much when it comes to one of our babies. Next time keep a bar of soap near when you are trimming nails. If the nail starts to bleed, rake the nail through the bar of soap. It will clog up the bleeder and stop the bleeding. I learned this when I clipped one of my birds toe nails too short. I tried flour, I tried corn starch, didn't have the stiptic thingy. A bird board friend suggested it and it worked. |

My doggies nail clippers came with the stiptic stuff in a little container that is built in the handle. I cut little bitty Dottie aka Patches nail to short a couple of weeks ago and freaked out also. I put so much of that stuff on her nail and it did stop the bleeding, but for the 10 seconds it took me to get it open, I had little blood spots all over my shirt as she wiggled and tried to get away. I know how scary it is. I wouldn't cut nails again without the stiptic in hand. |

Flour also helps stop the bleeding if you can keep her from licking or walking on it. I always go for the steptic stick, though. It hurts like H, but it typically stops it quicker than anything else will. When our yellow lab attacked our black lab, she ripped the tip of her ear. The blood coming out tickled and she thought something was crawling on her ear, so she kept shaking her head. In doing this, the blood never got a good chance to clot. One hour later, 10:00 p.m., hubby finally called the vet, and he says, "Dip her ear in some flour and let me sleep." I screamed, "Then what? FRY IT?" LOL The last time I clipped one of Sue's nails too short, it bled for almost an hour. It looked like a lot of blood, but it wasn't. It was just small spots ALL over the place. She's alright Vickie. She didn't lose enough blood to warrant a steak...unless you just want to cook her one, that is. A nice filet mignon might make up for it. |

Well, I can completely relate to how you feel! I have accidently nipped my llaso's nail (they are black....so hard to see the quick) and it seemed like it bled forever. Then my daughter has birds and I clip their wings regularly and their nails....birdie moved and the clipper nipped to far and man did it bleed....I was freaking out as well. Hang in there.....by tomorrow she'll be fine.....and you will too...... I've gotten to the point now where i just take the little tiniest bit off the end and I don't try to get too close..... Lynn |

The peticure is a great little tool but it does take some training to get the dogs to tolerate it. Phil and I got one and it works well if you can keep a hold on the dog. We have managed to do Ratty's, Cameo's and Cutter's nails but did only a little for the first time. They don't like the noise so we started out with it off and let them play with it, we rubbed them with and then turned it on low speed and did it all over again. It takes a bit for them to get accustomed to it but it makes for nicer nails without pain or accidentally cutting too far. So though it does take a bit of training after using it only once I have seen the difference and it is well worth it in my opinion. They have three models Phil and I chose the middle priced one. Check out http://www.peticure.com/ I sure hope Miss Daisey is feeling better now. I'm sure she'll be up and running around in no time. Love to her from the Palm Bay Rat Pack. |

Oh, it's awful to get bleeders, but even the best trimmers get them sometimes, especially on black nails. I keep stiptic powder on hand and with my big Lab, have actually vet wrapped her paw just to keep the blood from getting everywhere. Actually, getting her quiet is the best thing - it lowers the blood pressure and helps slow the bleeding. But, your husband was right, you got to let all the crude stay on there for a while or it will bleed again. Give her a kiss from KS and me |

Miss D is fine today. And she slept better htan me! I slept with my eye on her all night and a hand placed where I could feel her breathing and know if she moved to lick the foot. I was afraid she would cause it to bleed again. Then I had my mom come over today to check on her because she was "alone with the foot". For once I seemed like the nervous, irrational mother instead of my mom! My mom told me not to order one of those peticure things that she knows first hand that Santa has one for me! Hey, what are the yellow stars next to this thread name? |
