We took in this wonderful dog (pictured), Cocoa, after some people moved and left her. We were so excited to add one more to our pack of rescued dogs, until I started calling around to vets to get prices on fixing her...$300+! Our other two dogs were between $35-$90. We live in the Tri-Cities area now and in order to do it for less than that, we would have to drive 80+ miles. The great people of Pet Overpopulation can't even really help us short of helping out with transportation.
This is a community wide problem! I would love to hear your suggestions or thoughts?

| No. I can't believe it. Where we lived before you could buy a certificate at a local shelter. The $30 would go to the shelter and local vets would do it for free. It's win a win situations. I'm sure the vets just wrote it off. The best I can tell is the vets around here just want the money. How selfish!!!!! |

That is a great help. We have some relatives that live in Mt. Vernon, WA. We may have to pay them a visit; however, we will still have to drive a ways. Can you believe it? Not one of those areas are close. This is just wrong! The vets I've called, I've told them my story and they are TOTALLY unsympathetic. I thought these people went into their fields to better the lives of animals. Why is this area so different than other areas. |

Nice job on the research Mary! It really sucks when vets won't help the pet over-population problem. I guess in some areas $300 to spay is normal? My vet charges by weight and my little ones were about $150-160....I thought that was bad but he's the cheapest in my area. |

In Georgia, my vets charge $200- $250. We do have a spay/neuter clinic that is WAY less like around $60. I think I will still take Tinkerbelle to my vet, just because she has had a litter and still has a little milk. I just don't want them to run into anything weird because of her having these 7 babies in her uterus. I do plan on taking my male, Spoticus, to the low cost place for neutering. He should be easy and it's like $45 to have it done at the spay/neuter clinic. |

I'm aghast at these costs! Wow oh wow !! My supervisor just picked her westie up that she adopted from the pound yesterday. He was neutered yesterday morning. The $115 fee was for 1) Neutering 2) Microchipping 3) Heartworm testing (he was negative) 4) All shots 5) Rabies Shot I paid $115 to have Bailey neutered, and $58 for his microchipping fee. I'm in Tennessee, so maybe we're a bit cheaper generally speaking... but the prices you quoted above are ridiculously high! |

Have you checked with your local Humane Society? Sometimes they have certificates that you can purchase and have the dog spayed at local veterinarians that work with them. It's a good program that benefits both the owners and the humane society, and it gives the vets a chance to give back to the community. |

| Yes I am here in Washington lucky for me I am in Seattle so I do have some low cost options but the vets are getting way too expensive and if you can find one you understand I would count my self lucky. A lot of them around here that are less expensive for a quote throw hidden fees in like sedation for a spay is an extra charge can you believe that they advertise 60-90$ for the spay and then have to add on sedation and another cost to close the incision up be careful for the hiden fee people. |

When we rescued Fred he was already nuetered from Russell Rescue, 150 out the door for Fred.
When I got Alice from the shelter she was a mess. She had so much wrong with her plus she was not spay. The total vet bill was around $400.00 but I am not sure how much of that was the spay, medications, and all that. It;s so darn expensive.
Their microchips were like 35 each I think. |

I HAVE 1 MALE KITTEN WHO IS 6 MONTHS OLD WHO NEEDS TO GET NEUTERED BUT MY VET WANTS $125.00-$150.00. SO I WENT TO THE WEB SITE THAT SUZIE PUT UP http://www.friendsofanimals.org/programs/spay-neuter/index.html AND THIS IS WHAT THEY SENT ME:
We are sorry but Friends of Animals does not have a participating
veterinarian to accept FoA low-cost spay/neuter certificates in your area.
It is important to have your pet spayed or neutered. Contact the local
humane societies and shelters in your area. Often they have a low-cost
spay/neuter program or can refer you to a veterinarian who is willing to
help.
You can also try contacting veterinarians in your area and ask if they are
willing to accept FoA spay/neuter certificates. Have any interested
veterinarians contact FoA for more information at 1-800-321-PETS (7387).
Thank you.

| Well, "Friends of Animals" is a great idea, except that, they don't have any participating vets in this area either. It's insane. I found out that if you adopt a dog from the shelter here, they don't even follow up to make sure that the dogs adopted even got fixed. I've lived in places where they will come and get the dogs if you don't follow through. |

This is a major cause of what is happing everywhere. I live in the wonderfull state that almost passed that god awful AB1634. It's next to imposible to find a s/n clinic here. When you do it's booked for months. The San Francisco area charges over $300 for a s/n. |

What is AB1634? And how do we keep it out of our state!
Anti dog ownership bill disguised as a manditory spay and neuter bill. It will come your way in some form. HSUS and PETA are backing it. HSUS just wants the money and PETA does not want you to have a pet.
The root of most of the over population is the cost of a s/n, the other is back yard breeders.
Join the Yahoo goup CApetlaw for the real story on AB1634 and it's offshoots. |

| When I had a Ratbone foster neutered I just couldn't see paying my own vet the $300 from Ratbone funds so I bought a spay coupon from Friends of Aniamals for about $50 and found a participating vet clinic. I actually liked the participating vet more than my own but it wasn't convenient for everyday so I now use them as my secondary vet. With Friends of Aniamals (online) you buy a certificate (between $45 and $60 when I did it depending on male/female and cat/dog) and you do a printout of vet in your area that will take it. I ended up paying a some extra because I got him microchipped, bought pain meds and a cone. But still, it was nothing like what my vet wants. |

The spay/neuter situation is sickening...state to state varies 100%...very ridiculous. The South still uses inhumane euthanasia because "pets" are considered "property" ......not anything more...UGH!
The South is reknown for unsupported sterilization programs, therefore equals multitudes of 'euthanized" animals daily.
In states like Vermont, etc there are STATE funded sterilization programs so kill shelters are almost non.existant! They have sterilization programs that are totally free, or almost. That is why so many Southern rescues transport to those states.
OUR role as pet lovers is to lobby and be active in our states to inact free sterilization programs...fight for it!
It means getting vocal and active...just write letters for goodness sake!
it's like..if I say nothing, write no politicians, stay silent, then I am just as bad.... I contributed to the deaths of all those cats, dogs, etc.
I love this rescue group's comments...she is in Ga. She is very angry about our lack of steriliization laws and tries to transport to NJ etc for rescue.
