OMG He looks so grotesque.  I'll try to get a few pix of him.  The swelling is about as large and as hard as a golf ball now.  My vet said to hot pack it and that it may oose and pop, but that's what he's hoping for..........  Gross!  Gross!  Gross!!

I'm dropping him off Monday - but Dr. Bart's not sure he can get to him that day.  He's pretty booked.  If not Monday, definitely Thursday.  My vet feels that since Mickey is still eating and active that even though he'd rather do this sooner than later, that waiting until Thursday will be OK.   He's on 2 antibiotics right now, so I hope they kick in soon and reduce the swelling somewhat...

Please say prayers for my Mocha Mickey Budda Belly Muckalucka!!

Usually the antibiotics are given a chance to combat the infection. Cutting in to an active infection is an invitation for it to spread rapidly. We are sending prayers for a rapid recovery, but it will be difficult. Is Mickey eating soft or hard food?

Little Master Cutter will be going for dental work in a couple of weeks, he is also on antibiotics to kill the infection. While I'm sure he was very much loved by his previous family, I don't think they could afford proper dental care for him and I'm afraid he will be going into his senior years near toothless.

Hi Phil,

Mickey was already on a round of antibiotics, and was still on them when it flared up again. But this time it's worse than it was 2 weeks ago! I can't understand how it could have gotten so bad when he was already ON an antibiotic!! My vet took him off that one and put him on 2 others (names I can't remember of course...)

He's eating dry kibble and doesn't seem like he's in too much discomfort, but it's painful if I touch it, and he's wary of any of the dogs if they get too close. I'm afraid there's more going on there than just an abscess....

Is your foster on Ratbone's site?? Master Cutter? Is he a new baby?

Sue, Master Cutter is our newer baby but the newest member of the Palm Bay Rat Pack will be picked up next Wen. and will be home with the family on Thurs. A good friend who is a truck driver and Uncle to our little ones is driving me up to Geogia where I get to finally get to meet Carol, Tinkerbelle's Mommy. Phil worries if I have to make long trips alone. I can't wait until it's time to bring little princess Nala Belle home.

Cutter's previous family lost their home, jobs and cars and then had to give up Cutter too. We rescued him from the shelter here and I fell in love with him so Phil let me keep him. I always wanted a tiny one. He is 10 years old and a total little love bug so I call him CutterBug(cuddlebug).

Zip has been approved for adoption so now we are just waiting on the paperwork and the adoption fee and he will go to his new home in Jupiter, FL. Cricket will be the only foster I have left and after she is adopted I will have to take a break from foster care and focus on school which I start in November. I hope Mickey gets well soon and that nothing really bad is going on in his little mouth. Prayers for you little Mickey Ratbone.

Ouch, sounds like a nasty abscess (I had to lookup the spelling), something is up in there causing the infection and obviously needs to be cleaned. I can almost picture him with a rag wrapped around his face and tied on top. Sometimes just the smallest thing stuck under the gum, if left untreated, can lead to misserable results. It only takes a couple of days for the body's defenses to kick in, speaking from personal experience. That lead me to having a nightmare about my teeth turning to long stringy shreds.

Sue - I am so glad that Dr. Bart was able to pinpoint exactly what needs to be done to help poor Mickey.

(and it sounds pretty gross too)

Thanks, everybody!!  He's a little trooper, tho!!  He's still his good-natured, happy little self.  If that stops in the next few days, then THAT'S when I'll TOTALLY freak out!!  I sure hope these antibiotics kick in and reduce the swelling a little anyway!!

If the swelling doesn't start reducing maybe an anti-inflamatory might be in order. Duramaxx could maybe help and we've found it not too hard on the system, at least with Rattagan.

Dr. Bart also mentioned hot packing his face.  He may just let me do that, actually.  I guess the reason why I'm so concerned is because he looks so disfigured!    But thanks for the tip, Phil.  I will call Dr. Bart later and ask if that'd be OK to do....

Good news!  Mickey's swelling has reduced significantly, but there's still a pretty big, hard swelling on his jaw, so we've scheduled surgery for Thursday.... but a lot of the secondary swelling is now gone... thank goodness... he was lookin pretty scary there for a while!
