Ok.... This is my first rat terrier and i was wondering about health issues(if any). I had a jack Russell till yesterday. I had to put her down because of severe allergies.  So i was wondering if they are prone to allergies? Do they shed a bunch? Any tips i should know?

                                    Thanks!  Maggie's mom

Welcome. Make sure you post lots of pictures!
Sorry about your Jack Russell. I understand your pain.
As for allergies, Lucy has sensitive skin but not really allergies. Lucy sheds some but, if she would not be such a baby and let me brush her, she would shed a lot less.
Any other tips -- just love her and she'll love you back ten-fold.

Welcome to the site. I have a 6 month old girl that so far has no allergies. Others have some with allergies. I would make sure to feed high quality food to prevent any allergies seems like corn and other grains are high on the allergy list. I am sorry about your jrt. I hope you can post a picture of your Rattie! We love pictures! Where did you get her?

Welcome! I am so sorry about the loss of your JR. Ratties have some allergies, mostly to grains, but that's easy to remedy with a grain free diet. I have a rattie with mild seasonal allergies...I give her benedryl when she seems to be miserable. I also use a hypo-allergenic shampoo on her since the regular stuff dries out her skin too much. Other than that, my ratties are healthy, active and happy girls. They do shed, but not any more than any other dogs I've had.

What's your ratties name? How old is he/she? We'd love to see pics...we love pics around here.

Rat terriers are prone to allergies.  Some are allergic to grains (corn, wheat, etc.) but many also to pollen, flea bites, grass, etc.  I have a rattie that has a lot of allergies but they are controlled by keeping her away from allergens (grain-free food, etc.) and giving her Benedryl or Claritin.

I'm so sorry about your JRT.  How old was he/she?  The allergies must have been very bad indeed to have to euthanize him.

Welcome!

Murphy has some alergies and we have to be careful what food he eats.  Grains (wheat in particular) seem to set him off the most and he starts itching and sometimes throws up.

He reacted badly to some dog shampoo too, and so I started using a hypoalegenic shampoo and that seems to be ok.

Overall... RT's are very healthy dogs.  You chose well.
