So Otis has a sore on his front leg that he has had for months. Before you say it I took him to the vet and we did a skin scrape and there is not so they gave him a script for antihistamine for an allergic reaction. We have gone through the whole prescription and he is still licking and I’m not sure the meds even helped.
The hard thing is that I’m not sure if it’s a skin irritation that he is licking of if his constant licking is causing the irritation.
Any ideas? |

| Our previous dog would get a hot spot from licking one spot too much. The vet gave us some kind of topical ointment for it. |

| My husband wants to put tripple anitbiotic ointment on it and cover that with tobasco. I haven't given the ok for that treatment yet, I just can't think putting tobasco in an open wound would feel very good. Plus knowing him Otis might just like it. |

Try the ointment and get an elizabethean (sp) collar - you know one of those conehead things, to try to get the licking to stop... that's only going to continue to irritate it.
What kind of food do you feed him? Could possibly be a food allergy... |

| I'm feeding the same thing I've fed him since he was a puppy and the same food moy other dog getts. I thought of a food allergy but wouldn't he get sores somewhere else? |

Not necessarily. Allergies in dogs can manifest themselves in all sorts of ways. My Sasha used to chew her paws red and raw until I addressed her allergy problems. Others get itchy all over. Some sneeze or do the inverted sneeze... the only way to know is to change the food. The most common allergy is to the grains in the food like corn...

Ok I'll try a different food. It figures, he ate the dead skunk and was fine but the kibble is killing him! |

my male dobie would get these nasty looking hot spots every so often...as soon as one would clear up, another one would start. every OTC treatment we tried never helped...after trying the triple ointment and several different hot spot gels didn't help, I finally took him to the vet. the vet said they were staph infections and he was put on some heavy duty antibiotics for several months, which finally cleared the them up. Keep an eye on your pup and I hope the food change helps clear up his sore/allergies. |

You might try mixing equal parts water, baby oil, and Listerine in a spray bottle. Spray it on hot spots and massage it in. I've never tried it but have read good things about it. Some believe it works because Listerine contains herbal oils (thymol, eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate) that may have anti-fungal activity.
You might also try virgin coconut oil. I got rid of some bumps on Oscar's ears by massaging in virgin coconut oil. It needs to be the unrefined and non-hydrogenated type though. |

my rattie has the same problem , only now he has broken out in what appears to look like hives, he constantly licks his paws, and legs, so much the hair fell out, the vet tried everything, tested for mites, skin scrappings, and shots, food changes, and the only conclusion the vet came to was an environmental allergy which we cannot figure out, we switched to hypo aller laundry detergent, method soap, all natural floor cleaners, all nature grain free food, and treats for months, and nothing helped, preg. (Steroid) worked for a while but as soon as he stopped taking it it came back |
