Hi all, I am new to this site. I've been reading and researching and found answers to some of my questions and found some very silly stories. One thing i've noticed is i'm not having as much trouble as most i've read about w/ young puppies. Before I go on, my point is.. is she just a really good dog, or is the rough part still to come.?
We bought our first rat terrier "Roxy" 4 wks ago. She is now approacing 17wks old. She definately has puppy behaviors but not near as bad as some i've read about. I bought her from a very nice breeder who started crate training and doggie door training from the beginning. What a blessing that was. Roxy sleeps all night in her crate. Very seldomly whines and if she does, less that 1 min. She uses the doggy door regularly although i still take her out at very obvious times (i.e. out of the crate in the am, before bed after a nap...) She's only had a couple accidents which were very random. She's definately a thief.. she steals my 3yr old daughters toys. For now seems like a game so my daughter will chase her. She doesnt have much interest in chewing them. She has lots of chew toys and we just give her a firm "no" and replace my daughters toy with something she is aloud to chew on. She digs a little bit, can escape the back yard if she tries very hard, but generally doesnt. We live on a 1/4 acre w/ our horses. She's curious but doesnt bother them. she runs free when we're out in the open yard. Ventures a little but sticks close and comes when she's called. She rides in the car very well in a crate or loose. She got used to baths real quick because we have huge flea issues in this mesa sand i live in. (i treated w/ frontline but it didnt work, now she's on advantix and hopefully that'll work better). She is very patient w/ my 3yr old daughter (she is meant to be my daughter's dog). She allows my daughter to carry her and play gentle and rough. They chase each other . She snapped at her once, so we had a little "you lay on your back and look up at me little dog" session and it hasnt happened again. Overall she's been a really good puppy.
So after all that, my question is... am i lucky and she's just gonna be a really good dog, or has she not reached the point in her age where most people are having behavioral issues? Is she not old enough to be in "teething mode", will she revert and start going to the bathroom in the house. I just don't wanna get used to the way things are, and then all of a sudden we're back at the beginning. I've raised 6 puppies, all large dogs, different breeds and it seemed to me that all the trouble with potty training and teething started right away by 8wks of age. But i've always heard that large dogs are easier to train than small dogs. I've never had a small dog, let alone a terrier so if anyone has any advise, maybe you started with what seemed to be a good dog and then at a certain age they turned in to a doggy devil?
thanks for listening (reading)

Welcome Lorrie and Roxy! Both of your girls are so cute! My ratties were the first "small dogs" I've ever had too, and they did seem to be easier to house train than the other dogs I've had (and I had 2 rattie pups at once!), especially better than my dobie, who isn't exactly the smartest dog in the world (shh, don't tell her I said that). I'm sure you'll find out that this breed can be too smart for their own good at times. Watch the "stealing" of your daughter's toys...my ratties got a little out of control with the stealing...mostly my dad's slippers which they insisted needed to be outside in the middle of a 1 acre field of tall grass...that was so much FUN to track down. Your pup should be starting to teeth at any time...mine started right at 4 months. I have one angelic rattie who would never even think of doing anything wrong (Lucy, my lemon/white rattie), and one very independant, difficult rattie who wants to do everything in her own way/time (Molly, my black tri). Even my sweet girl was a little difficult off and on during the first year, when they test their boundaries (and our nerves ), but with consistancy and training, she returned to my sweet angelic girl. Molly is a work in progress...no really, she's a good dog too, just on the independant side, but she's a sweetie at heart even if she doesn't want to admit it...she's the first one to greet me when I come home and the real "snuggler" of the 2. We LOVE pics around here...please share some of Roxy when you get a chance! |

| My rattie is now about 9 1/2 months old. She too has been an excellent pup....except with housetraining! We are still struggling. I've posted before about this and have followed most everyone's advice, but we are still working at it. Oreo won't signal to go out even though we hung bells...we hit them each time we go out, but she still hasn't figured it out. I still have to watch her closely. She doesn't exhibit typical signs she needs to go. It's frustrating. She never really chewed anything of importantance...we offer her bully sticks to chew, which she loves! It sounds like you have a great puppy who will turn out to be a great dog! Keep up the good work! |

| Sounds to me like you got yourself a great little doggie! Ratties are very smart, great dogs! It sounds like the breeder did a great job with her puppies to help make your job easier. Welcome to the site! Hope you can post pictures soon!! |

Welome Lorrie and Roxy, you have two beautiful girls there. It sounds like Roxy is just a sweet treasure for you and even if she is pretty much a normal rattie, you still should consider yourself lucky. Our Cameo is almost 11 months old now, as are her brother Toa, sister Lily, and other two brothers somewhere else (Brutus and Titus). She came to us at 10 weeks litter box trained. She got to a box about 75% of the time when we missed her signs of having to go. She immediately knew where the doors where (I think from sniffing the outside world at the threshold) and most often would have her accidents near one of outside the doors. After a couple of months she pretty much pottied outside all the time like a big girl. She learned the doggy door in our new house when it was put in and pretty much goes out when she needs to, but will sit at a door asking to go out as well. She has had very few accidents in the house, once she was ill from heat exhaustion and once when we first moved in. Since all the floors are tile or wood it is easy to clean. Cameo loves to play with toys and will try to snatch a toy from a pack mate if they have one (typically it is foster Zipper who likes toys too). Parts of the backyard have always been on top of her chew list. Our ratties have been fortunate to have someone home with them almost all the time and we were able to keep on top of Cameo when she was really teething to keep her away from anything she shouldn't chew and get her outside when needed. She learned well and now almost always follows the rules. Like others at this age she is becoming more independent, going off on her own, but will always find me when she wants, sticking nearby late at time. We've been working with Cameo's leash training, like any pup she is easily excited. We've decided to stick with a harness for her and keep her on a short lease. I make her sit at the door before going out and before coming in. I really need some roller blades or something so I can keep up with her, but I make do trotting along. I try to keep the leash just long enough the I'm not pulling back and try to keep us together, either speeding up with her (to burn it off) or slowing her down to my speed. I'll be happy when we can just walk together and not have it be a training excercise. Next week Janie is picking up Nala Bella at 8 weeks old and we're going to be starting all over again. One of her brothers will be going to a RT member and we're all going to have lots of puppy pics and stories. |

| Well to say the least you are very blessed. I got Ollie at 6 weeks, he is now 14 weeks and he is resisting potty training at every step. We have made very little progress. He chews alot, about the only inappropriate thing he likes to chew on regularly is me and we are working on that too. He is very stubborn and strong willed. He will even be at my feet and start peeing while never breaking eye contact with me. He has definitely been a challenge and I am sure it will get worse before it gets better. |

Hello,
I am new to the site too, and have never owned a rattie before. we rescued our trix from a shelter. she is completely eager to please, most of the time. she will go days even weeks without getting in trouble. then one day she will just get a wild hair and decide not to listen to anything we say. she finds herself in her kennel and knows exactly why, it is crazy. it almost seems that she is just constantly testing her boundries. but it seems to come in go in spurts. she is 7 months now. Even so, it does seem like the breeder did get your rattie off to a good start, kennel training is the best!!! it is their security. |

Lorrie
BOTH! She is probably going to be a really great dog. And she is not finished her puppyhood yet. Teething really gets going between 3-6 months, esp when they are cutting molars (like babies). There is often this 'teenager' period that hits anywhere between 9 months and 2 years (depending on the dog) when they seem to forget everything you trained them. HOWEVER every dog is different and none of these periods lasts forever.
Welcome to the site and enjoy your pup! |
