I am having a hard time potty training Ollie. I am pee pad training him. He doesn't go outside at all. I work from home so he is rarely ever left alone. The potty training isn't going very well. I know it takes time and he's still young but we are 7 weeks in and very little progress. My question is, how do you crate train if you are here all the time and if they are crated how do you incorporate exercise into the mix?

I know I am probably going about this all wrong and I am making too many mistakes. Please help.

I crated both of mine and no one was ever not home. They crate, go potty and if they don;t go crate again for 15 min or so. After they potty I would play or just hang out with them until I knew it was potty time again. And again, if they didn't go....back in the crate for 15 min and repeat until they did. If I could not watch them 100 percent, into the crate. Or I would also tether them to me with a leash so they could not get out of my site. They learn quick. The reward for being out of the crate is pottying outside. Soon enough the crate was gone and they were trained in no time. Be consistant and don't give the chance for an accident and you will see changes soon.

Are you trying to train him to potty pads AND going potty outside or just the pads? Doing both at the same time can be confusing for them.

If you're just doing the pads the same theory with crating should work. Mayfly used potty pads exclusively for the first year but I didn't crate her....I was lucky and she just used the pad from day 1.

He doesn't go outside at all. I live where a lot of BIG dog owners walk their dogs without leashes so I am not taking any chances. When I try to take him out just to go to the mail box at the end of the apartment complex he still wants to be held the whole time and shakes like crazy because he is so nervous. So, it's pee pads only.

Oh, don't blame you! Can you drive someplace to get him and walk him? Not to potty but I mean just to socialize him.

I have to agree. I would want to keep him safe but for his peace of mind he really should be taken out for excercise and stimulation. Socialization is a good thing. Even going out to the pet store, a park, anywhere that gets him out of the house.

Yeah I am trying to get him socialized with people and pets. I take him to Petsmart regularly and a friend's house who has a Chihuahua/Fiest mix. She weighs about 4 pounds so they are the same size, lol. I also have lots of friends come over and if they have pets I have them bring them too. He seems to be more comfortable meeting new people and animals on his own turf lol.

And here we go, I look down and he is pooing at my feet.....grrrrrrrrr

Well, I was home when potty training Daisy our RT who is 1 yr old. I must say from my experience with our RT she was more difficult to train than my other dog who is not a RT. But, back to your question.....I am a firm believer in crate training. While I was home and could give Daisy 100% of my attention...she would be out in the main area of the house. I honestly did my best to keep her on the tiled areas....just in case..... But if I was working on something and couldn't keep an eye on her, then she went into her crate. She was one who peed in her crate.....drove us nuts....but it does honestly just takes time. When these guys are little their bladder isn't that big and if they get nervous or upset...they pee. JMO, I think the dog should learn to go outside...this also may be causing confusion. Consistency is the key. And boy when she did go outside, I made a big deal of it....and had special little treats that she LOVED and she only got them when she went potty outside. I also had one of those "clickers" and she loves the sound of that....so when she went potty I'd use the clicker and she'd run over and get her treat. But Daisy was also one who was sneaky....she'd slink off if I wasn't paying attention and go way down the hall into the workout room and go in there. So I ended up putting a baby gate at the hallway so she was basically "glued" to me....where i could keep an close watch. It is a hard phase to go through and I can completely relate to your frustration.....but just be consistent with your routine.....and it will come I promise! It took about 6 months of training with Daisy before I felt 100% comfortable where she'd have no accidents or not sneak off....so it is not an overnight thing for sure..... HANG IN THERE!

I put Holly in the crate only when there will be no one at home.  I never used it for training.  She has been trained to go on the pads.  Gosh I had 3 of them down when we got her at 8 weeks.  I would just keep putting her on them and praise her when she went to the bathroom, yes she had a few accidents...but that is to be expected.  By the time she was 4 months old I was down to 1 pad.   She is 10 1/2 months old now, and she is still using the pad.......we do not have a fenced in yard so we have to walk her.  And she refuses to go potty outside.  I am hopping she will be going outside by the time she turns 1.  But dont see anything changing anytime soon.   It is hard, and boy do you need patience.  When she is ready she will go outside, thats how i look at it.

In my opinion, for the most part, you need to pick one or the other. A dog does not and will not ever understand that it's ok to use potty pads but only in an emergency and that you'd prefer him/her to go outside ideally. If trained to potty in the house on potty pads, a dog will have a much more difficult time of ever being trained to potty only outside - especially the longer it goes on.

A dog is born with instincts --- everything else must be trained. Regarding urinating and defecating, the only instinct a dog has is to not go where they sleep and/or eat. Anything other than that is fair game, including your plants, the sofa, the spare bedroom, etc., UNLESS they are properly trained by their humans.

Well I am definitely not going back and forth. It's always the pee pads. But he is trying my patience so very very much.

Sounds like you should litter train him if you are not going to have him potty outside. Regardless the key, as stated repeatedly above (and well everywhere you will search) is consistently keeping him on a schedule, and where you can catch him if he starts to go in the wrong place. Crate, potty chance or back in crate, potty and gain some freedom and play time etc.

Just think of  crate training as a training tool - not punishment or confinement.. the idea is the pup learns that he is rewarded for eleminating properly by getting to come out an play with family.  Along the way the crate will become a "den".. a cozy, safe place to get away from it all.  Mine actually prefer their crates especially later in the evening - two are in their crates now and will be until we all go to bed.. last one to bed will shut the doors until morning.

I hope you find what works for you - best of luck and hang in there, be persistent and consitent.

Ok, is litter training better the pad training?

As for as his crate...he already considers it a safe place and goes in there often.
