so if anyone read my question about back and hip prob, I took Jax to the vet and before they jump to a bunch of tests, etc, they suggested give it some time and see if he can lose a few pounds first...He's a "big" dog but also very muscular and solid so it's hard to figure out what he should lose...so brings me to my newest question...Anyone know of or suggest good weigh loss food??  I've had him on Iams Weight Control for a while and I swear that made him gain this weight... Now we switched to Nutro a few days ago...Any suggestions??? Anyone else have an "overwieght" Rattie??

I had posted on another thread (I think it was called "Amos' weight" or some thing like that) a chart for figuring out your dogs "ideal" weight. it should give you an idea of where he should be. my dobie mix was pretty heavy, and he had lost about 10 lbs while on Innova EVO...not every dog can handle the high protein in it, though. Nutro is a good food...stick with if for awhile and see how Jax does on that. if you see an improvement, stay with it.

I hate, hate, hate weight control, or diet foods.  It seems that every one of them reduces the protein and fat,  only to increase the amount of carbs in the food.  It's no wonder dogs gain weight on them,  they have to eat more to feel satisfied, with all those fillers.  I don't remember how many different low fat, low protein, low calorie foods I went thru trying to take weight off of my boy Lucky.  I was probably practically starving him feeding him that crap before I tried a high protein, low carb, grainless food.  I went with EVO Reduced fat and the weight came off Lucky without losing muscle.  He went from about 29 to 20 pounds and was more active compared to the other foods I tried.  I believe most who can't handle EVO are more affected by the higher fat than the higher protein.  I used the reduced fat because I also added fish oil (omega 3 fatty acids).  If your dog is otherwise healthy,  I highly recommend a low carb food like reduced fat EVO.  Most of the grainless (low carb) foods pack alot of calories so you have to be careful not to over feed.  I don't even look at the recommendations on the bag,  that is waaay too much food for my guy.  If you continue to feed the food you are now,  I would suggest cutting back on the amount you feed and add green beans for filler.  You can also give him an egg or low fat cottage cheese or fresh, lean meat for more protein.

I'm glad you said that about the recommendations on the back of the bags cause I wasnstarting to wonder if maybe I didnt feed him enough and maybe its slowed his metabolism...Jax weighs 24 lbs and I give him 1/2 cup of dry food and @ 1 1/2 tbsp of wet food...and he seems content...the only table food he gets is from "grandpa" every once in a while  haha

Thanks for tip on the EVO reduced fat Ski.  I've got 3 chunky monkeys here and I've been giving them Nature's Variety Instinct (no grain or potatoes) but I had to stop giving it to Mitzy as her acid reflux was bad on it.  But Skipper and Mayfly have really lost weight on it....Mayfly lost 1 entire pound.  Today at the vet's she weighed in at 10.5 lbs! Down from 11.4...she's a nice swelt doggie now.  I actually got worried the other day because I saw "something" protruding from her ...turned out to be a rib!   (Not that she's skinny by any means).

So I wonder if Reduced Fat EVO would work for Mitzy?
