We have never, EVER left the dogs in the house alone unless crated, sealed off in the tiled laundry room, or in the fenced back yard.  Button was just too mischievous as a puppy.  She was bad about chewing up papers and other stuff she found.  We never really saw Zipper get into mischief.  Snatching things is just not something she does.

Well, Button is now 4 and Zipper is 2 and they just almost NEVER get into trouble.  Neither gets on tables unless there is food there.  Both are flawlessly potty trained.  So when we went to visit Lance's Mom at the nursing home last night, we decided to try letting them stay in the house untended to see what would happen.  We knew we would be gone for no more than 30 minutes to an hour, tops.

Of course, we closed off the bedrooms and Lance's game room (way too much temptation in those two areas ), but they had free run of the main part of the house which is pretty much "dog-proof" all the time.  When we got home, Button was asleep on her bed and Zipper was on the sofa asleep.  They both stretched and yawned and we quickly realized nothing had been destroyed.  We were quite pleased.

Then we decided to do it again today while we ran some errands.  Decided to push our luck & eat lunch out, too.   Got home 3 hours later and again they were on their pillow beds (one in the dining room and the other in an alcove under my kitchen counter.  They seemed bewildered we allowed this, actually.  So I think we could allow this once in awhile, don't you guys?

I'm happy your girls behaved themselves. Right or wrong, I've never crate trained any of my dogs, and once they were past the usual "puppy" phase they were always fine in the house alone. Whenever I come home they are coming out of the bedroom stretching and happy to see me. There was only one time when I came home to something destroyed...the first time we left our first dobie (who was 1 1/2 yrs old when we got him) home alone we came home to a paperback book ripped to shreds. After that, he was always the perfect gentleman.

My ratties automatically get into their crates when we are leaving. This morning, I left the tv on, and told them I would be back in a little while, and left them sleeping on the couch. I got back an hour later, and all was ok. Of course, I left the bedroom doors closed...

Good girls!!! When we're not home we always crate Julia (she's a little over a year and a half)...she still gets into everything and eats anything left on the floor. So for her safety and my peace of mind we do crate her...as for Caesar (he's 2 1/2years), we never crate him anymore. He does so well!!! He went through the chewing phase but not as much as my sweet Julia does. I hope that one day we can leave them both out while we're not at home.

That's great Peggy! I can leave my older dogs loose in the house for pretty long periods of time, but I cannot leave Bailey. He jumps on the kitchen counters and gets into everything... something he would NEVER consider doing in my presence. LOL Remember ... I left him for an hour one day and returned home to find 7 bananas... peeling included... gone from the top of the kitchen counter. A lesson learned!

They said Sally was crate trained when we adopted her, and my husband used to crate his beagle when he could not be left outside during the day, however I really, really didn't want to crate Sally all day long and leaving her outside is out of the question if I'm not out there with her.  We have a fairly large kitchen with ceramic tile floors, so I just baby gate the kitchen off from the rest of the house, close the bathroom door off the kitchen and she has the run of the kitchen.  She still chews anything she finds on the floor or any surface she can get if left alone long enough.  But I'm looking forward to the day when I can let her have the run of the house!

I can let Ernie have the run of the house for any period of time..... as long as there's NO kleenex in the bathroom basket. I've seen him scope out the house when I'm home to see if there's any little tissue a stray.
He just sleeps on his bed in the guest bedroom. He has never jumped up on counters or chairs in the kitchen.

Fred has had run of the whole house since the day we got him. He is just so mellow we never really worried. Alice the spaz got gated in the kitchen for the first month, then I slowly let the two of them have run together, and hour or so then longer then longer. Now our crate doesn't even have a door and they both get full run of the house all day while we are at work or whenever we leave. I always come home to them yawning or when I pull up I see them on the back of the couch looking out. There are very few accidents but the good thing is if they can't hold it they go in the basement where it's cement and easy clean too. I swear I am blessed to have two very good dogs. They don't jump on counters/tables, they are not chewers, never get in any garbage bathroom kithchen bedroom, nothing. I guess I am lucky.

BUT, I also walk them every morning and make sure they are tired when I leave them too!! A tired dog is a good dog!!

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

Yes, I remember the bananas story.    Ya know, Button truly has pogo sticks for legs and can jump to counter height  easily.  But for some reason she has never, ever jumped onto tables or counters for some reason.  Now she'll stand on her hind legs and try to pull stuff off of them with her paws when close to the edge, but that's all.  Just doesn't occur to her to get a running headstart and just jump on up there, I guess, because I know she's capable.  She'll jump straight up in the air high enough to give you a kiss on the mouth but never jumps up on counters.  Guess I should count my blessings, huh?

Peggy I think that's great news! And how lucky you are to be able to do this too. We just aren't there yet and I'm sure we won't be for a while. Chloe is 14 mo old now and was okay - all by herself (before Bonnie) for maybe an hour, but since she decided to cop a squat right in front of me the other night and peed on the brand new carpet in the TV room (little stinker) I don't think I'd even try that right now. I honestly don't know what got into her because she is completely potty trained.

Bonnie is now about 8 mo and she chews on everything! She gets under our upolstered chairs and rips out the lining from the bottom, chews the couch cushions, eats anything she finds, and is back to having the occasional accident in the house again, so we just aren't there. But I sure do look forward to the day when we are!

Terri, Button is 4 years old, so this freedom for her (and 2 y.o. Zipper) has been a very long time in coming. Button has been a "trial" to raise. Very independent, willful little dog when younger. LOL

This is interesting reading all these posts. I've left Shadow out on a trial basis too and he has done well for maybe an hour... But I will never leave him out of his crate when I am gone for any longer because he still is a heavy chewer and he will chew things up. Plus my roommate is afraid that he and the 2 cats she has will get into mischief. It is good to be able to trust your dog. Keep up the good work. I hope one day when Shadow gets out of this stage he will be good. He will be 2 years old this coming November.

Sadie and minnie are a pair of brats, we don't crate them, mainly because someone is usually always home. but if you leave the bathroom door open its on, they will tp the whole house if you give them a chance. we came home one night and my father in law left the guest bathroom door open, before he went to bed and the girl took a nice new roll of tp and went all over the house with it. they must of thought they were decorating. when we came home all we could do was laugh and start cleaning up. sadie knew she did a no no, cause she was laying on her bed and wouldn't move. with her ears back and all. minnie of course was bouncing up and down like she had just build the eifel tower all by her self. ... sigh.... they are a handful sometimes...
