I have a toothache, It started last night and is killing me today!! I go the dentist sat at 9am but I don't know if I can make it. The oragel isn't even working. I know I am going to need a root canal on this tooth. What can I do to ease the pain, anything? Rip it out myself because I am close to that!!

vicodin.  Except you need a RX for it.

Ibuprofin or something like that. I don't know if chloraseptic rinse would help or not if it is down in the root.

Put a warm compress on the side of your face where the toothache is or take same ibuprofen.
It should help to ease the pain.

do you have the extra strength over night oragel? I had to use that cause the other stuff didn't work and I put some back where the jaw moves and it deaden that whole side of my jaw. Oh the stuff that comes in the cotton swab looking things worked really well for me. They were like cotton swabs with the meds in it and you snapped one end and the juice came out the other end. I also alternated hot and cold compresses I hope that helps toothaches are NO fun.

I have been taking the limit on ibuprofin and it's not helping. I tried taking Guys Perkaset from his back surgery but it made me projectile vomit so I am stearing clear of that. I have vicodin but it makes me nauseous too. I got the regular oragel, you think the stronger stuff would be better?? I will get it after work if so. and biting ice feels sooooooo good or just letting ice sit on my tooth, I can't wait til Sat am even though I know he is going to refer me to an oral surgen.

My dentist always has recommended ALEVE for tooth pain. It has helped me when I was in a situation where I couldn't get to the dentist right away. Try it....hope you find some relief. Tooth pain is no fun!

Lynn, I did take that this morning and it seemed to help for a minute or two. Aleve scares me because can't you only take like 2 a day??

VANILLA EXTRACT!

I know it sounds crazy and it sounds like it will make it worst but I promise you IT WONT. Put vanilla extract on a q-tip and put it on the tooth that hurts. It will numb it and make it feel way better. Good luck! Cloves are good too! Ambesol and orajel work miracles. Pain killers such as tylenol, advil and such work too.
Alsoo, whiskey. I know it sounds stupid but if you swish it around in your mouth and hold it on the side that hurts it deadens the pain for a few hours.the walmart brand oragel maxium strenght works good to.
also there is this stuff at walgreens the has a little bottle of liquid pain reliever and a cotton ball and a pair of twizzers, im sorry i can't remember what its called but its in a yellow package and you take the twizzers and dip the cotton ball in the pain reliever and hold it on the tooth, boy does that stuff work. as soon as my hubby gets home ill ask him what its called for you! im sorry your in pain, but i know the vanilla extract works for sure!

I've had some horrible toothaches, (I'm too chicken to go to a dentist, so I usually just tough it out) I have two teeth that give me a fit...or what's left of them...I usually pop about three extra strength tylenol and it helps for a couple of hours.

If you will use the ibuprofen(you can take 4 over the counter pills) then 2 hours later take tylenol(or the vicoden), 2 hours later hit the ibuprofen again, the 2 hours later back to tylenol. You should not take either closer than every 4 hours but if you alternate like that and keep it on schedule, it will help to keep the pain down until you can get to the dentist. I know, I've had 3 root canals, and I lived on tylenol and motrin each time. If you get to sleep, just start the scheduled tylenol and motrin when you wake up, but it may take a bit to "catch up." Oh yeah, do not alternate tylenol and vicoden every 2 hours. That will give you too much tylenol and can mess up your liver.

This sounds crazy, but it works. I've used it myself, on my husband, my children, recommended it to others, and it has worked for all of us.

Get whole cloves (not garlic, the spice cloves) and put one by the area of your gum where the bad tooth is. It works almost instantly.

Oh dear... I'm sorry you have a tooth ache! I've spent half my life in a dentist's chair, so I KNOW what you are going through and can sympathize with you, Val. If the tooth is absessed (sounds like it is...) then there's really nothing powerful enough you can purchase OTC to do away with the pain, unfortunately. Just take some Advil to knock at least some of the edge off.

Sorry....

I just seen all these home remedies with the vanilla and cloves. I will try these methods tonight as I have one more night to get through before the dentist. I went after work and got the maximum strength oragel and I can'te belive how much better it worked than just the regular. I did that and took one of Guy's Perkaset for his back pain. That seemed to work as I was asleep by 9:30!! It's so nice that Guy is home all day with the dogs for the past 2 weeks. They are tired by 8:00 and ready for bed so I can go to bed early too. I haven't taken anything yet today just the oragel but I feel the little throb coming on.

Valerie, you can also try wetting a tea bag with warm water and holding it on the tooth. For some reason that sometimes deadens the pain for a while. The tea like that doesn't taste too good but it worked for me. For extreme migraine headaches I take 2 tylenol and 2 ibuprophen together. It helps the pain, maybe that would work for your tooth until tomorrow?

Hope you feel better soon.

I would avoid the Tylenol all together in this mix. Mixing NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen with acetaminophen (tylenol) can play a real tune on your liver. Stick to the NSAIDs - they are pain killers and also reduce swelling - part of what causes the pain. Tylenol does not reduce swelling.

One time when the power was out because of an ice storm-- and therefore all the dentists were inaccessible, and with every breath there was pain because teh cold air hurt as much as ice water can when your tooth is sensitive...

I drank a lot of kaluha with milk. And I took an over the counter pain reliever (don't remember which one)...

But honestly, it may sound silly, but alcohol actually helps. You know in the old westerns when the cowboy would drink liquor before the "doc" dug a bullet out of his arm or whatever? It's a very very old home remedy, but there is something to it. And I found that even though I drank more than I would normally (and I'm a LIGHTWEIGHT) I wasn't at all buzzed because it went to pain, not my head.
