I had Dega spayed on Tuesday.  She goes back this Tuesday to get her stitches removed.  The vet told me to just not let her jump around for two days, then everything would be fine.  But I'm worried about her.  She still isn't acting right...she acts 'down in the dumps' and just sleeps all the time and eats very little.  Her incision looks fine, no redness or oozing.  I just wanted to ask if this behavior is normal.  She is usually so wild it just makes me nervous when she is calm.

There's definately something in the way they do the stitches. Sometimes they will give the pup a little more flex room, and sometimes they don't. It also depends on how the incision scabs over. If there isn't any flex room, it will pull and sting every time they try to get up on the couch, stretch after sleeping, etc. Some dogs are fine after the dope wears off in 2 days, and some are down for a week or more. My parent's dog was down for almost 2 weeks, and my pepper was up in 3 or 4 days. The same vet did the procedure. She might still be in a bit of pain, too. I'd mention it to the vet, and see if they would recommend baby asprin or something.

I really would not worry too much till about a week after the stitches are out. But that's only because you don't see infection, and the vet will check things out when you get the stitches out.

Bijou was spayed a few weeks ago. She was pretty sore the next day, even taking pain meds., but was back to her normal frisky self the second day after surgery. Her biggest complaint was the wire stiches poking her tummy every time she moved! I finally shortened the ends to give her some relief.

I imagine each dog is different, just like us. Some tolerate pain better than others. Did your vet send your dog home with pain medication?

That's my baby girl, Bijou and her little brother Banjo, they are Toy Rat Terriers.

You could call the vet and ask. Each dog I have had spayed/neutered recovers in their own time. It should heal in 10 days. Its amazing how quickly they heal. Is she on antibiotics?

it all depends... everyone heels differently.. soreness can effect her... she will be ok im sure... just keep an eye on her, keep it clean nad keep her from licking it... braeli got infected afterwards and had an absess... they had to cut her back open and drain it out.. heel the infection... so she had a 3 week recovery... bt after the 3rd day or the "reopening" she was back to norm!
