I have an oversized, off-white couch I'm looking to replace.  I've been seriously considering a leather sectional.  Who else has leather, and how has it worn for you?  If you don't have leather, what do you have and is it wearing well?

I have to admit, this couch is almost 10 years old and for all the dogs that have come and gone, it's served me well.  It's also still rather comfy.  I may just have the cushions re-stuffed and forget buying a new one, but I saw a really awesome leather sectional I really, really, REALLY like....

You have to keep shiney smooth leather conditioned, with a special conditioning spray. At least that is what my friend had to do. She also would freak out, if one of the kids, put their shoes up on it. I don't know about doggie toenails. When you go looking, ask the sales person, what they suggest. It would be a shame to get something so nice and expensive, to have it ripped by toenails. Good luck!

I had leather in my car. Does that count? I LOVED it. No issues with Yaz's nails. Easy clean up. Like Donna said, keep it conditioned. If it's a good quality leather it should be fine. On the other hand. I am very obssessive about being "green" so I would say redo your existing couch if the frame is still good and you still like it. If you get a new couch the old one would go to a landfill most likely. Not eco friendly.

I have a leather couch and a loveseat in my family room and it does just fine. I'm late getting Ernie's nails cut most of the time (shame on me) and he has never torn or made a cut in the leather. It cleans so well I love it.

I have a microfiber couch and recliner that I got 2 yrs ago. They've held up pretty good so far. The only "problem" I have with them is that after sitting in them for any length of time, once you get up and touch something, you put off a static charge. I just try to remember to NOT touch the dogs right away...they don't like getting zapped for some reason.

If your old couch is still in pretty good condition (and you love it), I'd see how much it would be to have that reupholstered (possibly in leather...if that's what have your heart set on. who knows, you may save a few bucks )

We purchased leather furniture for our greatroom two years ago and really like it. I was hesitant because being in AZ....it is hot here alot and I figured with the leather we'd be sweating to death, but i can honestly say I really do like it. It is true, you do have to condition it.....but we paid a little extra to have unlimited conditioning stuff through the furniture store, so when we need some we stop by and we get refills....has worked out well. Now I only condition it two or three times a year.....so it isn't that often....

My friend bought leather couch, chair and matching ottoman when she was first married. She said after three years with it that she wished she had never bought it. You have to put a throw between it and you in the summer and if the house is too hot or else you stick like you have been superglued to it. Maybe this would not be a problem if she and I were not plus sized women but after peeling your skin off the couch a few times you don't want to sit on it. Besides that she purchased something that has lasted and lasted and lasted, through five kids. It is still good so her husband won't let her get rid of it, it will probably last forever. Leather wears well.

We got a cream color leather love seat, swivel chair, straight chair and ottoman. They're currently in the vestibule of my office, have lasted through 18 years of kids and 12 years of dogs. The ball bearings leaked out of the swivel thingie, but everything else is in tact.

On the other hand, suede has not served us very well. So if you wish to use animal type hides, I suggest a good leather over suede.

Yeah, we have a suede leather couch and it's only a few years old and not really holding up well... but it's not the suede, it's the frame! My parents bought it at Ashley's and it fell apart very soon... and we're not jumping up and down on it or anything! The suede itself holds up okay, to me, but I think leather would hold up better. But the suede holds up as well as cloth couches do.

The seams started parting on the suede couches that we have had over the years. I guess that could happen with a cheaply made leather set too, but the suede ones we had just never lived up to their promise. We currently have an ultrasuede theater seat thingie in our family room, but we got a bargain on that. We'll see how it holds up.

I've had leather furniture (couches/chairs) my entire adult life. Why? Dog hair does not embed itself in leather, it's easy to keep clean, and lasts ages. I would probably not get white or cream as it can show the oils from your skin and other dirt and thus requires more work. I prefer the darker colors. With dogs I like the tougher grain rather than the butter soft grains as they scratch up too easily.

It can get a bit warm but I don't let my house get that hot. I would not get leather if I had cats who claw furniture.
