Well I just pulled the thing out of the closet it has been in there for years (from my sheltie)  I am trying to get Ivy to learn how to use the thing and she is looking at me like I am crazy and wants me to keep pushing the bone down so she gets the kibble.  It is a gumball machine looking treat dispenser  that the dog pushes a bone shaped handle on and food comes out and I just for the life of me can not remember how I trained my Sheltie to use it.

Nora do you think maybe she is too young to start on this?  She is 5 months old now and I thought because she has learned so much so fast I wanted to start something new so she is not bored.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  I have the yummy treats in the thing and have tried to do the give me the paw on top of the handle and sometimes she accidentally pushes it and gets the treat  but doesn't seem to be connecting push the bone and  get the reward.  Does that make sense?

No... she's not too young at all, but I'm not familiar with the dispenser you are talking about. Can you post a picture of it? Get a clicker... and when she accidentally pushes it... or even LOOKS at it for that matter... click and treat her. Give her treats from your hand during the training process and eventually she'll get the idea. It's kinda like teaching a dog to ring a bell to go out. It's easy to train and even easier with a clicker because the clicker reinforces the correct behavior immediately. It's imperative to click the VERY INSTANT the dog looks at the dispenser.... then the dog will move toward the dispenser (click.. treat... immiedately) then the dog might put her paw on it (click...treat... immediately...) I promise you she will eventually get there. You will be clicking the steps toward the end behavior you are seeking...

Thanks I will get a clicker and try it. I have been meaning to get one and maybe a book on clicker training I have never used a clicker before and would like to give it a try. Any books you recommend? I did post a picture of it in the photos. I have had it for like 20 years or something been in a box in the closet for the past 5 years and wanted to have something new for Ivy!!
