So I've been reading "When Pigs Fly" by Jane Killion, which is a book that goes into detail concerning free shaping your dog's behaviors with a clicker.

Step #1 is to familiarize your dog to the clicker.  I bypassed step #1 because Bailey is already very much familiar with the clicker as a result of agility training.

Step #2 is to put a box in the floor and allow him the opportunity to offer you a behavior as it relates to the box.  The book recommends fixing a glass of wine (I like this part! LOL).. and lots of treats and sitting down because it could take awhile.... and for Bailey to be interested in the box at all DID take a long while.

The second he looked at the box... I clicked and rewarded and praised...(the book teaches you how to click the STEPS toward a behavior rather than the actual behavior itself.)

He immediately made the connection and kept going back to the box and offering behaviors .... any behavior.... which would result in a click and treat.

So we did this several times over the weekend... short sessions, but fun sessions.  So now when I put the box or basket in the floor, he immediately jumps in it and stands and I click.

Last night we graduated from standing in the box to BOWING in the box (rump in the air... front legs on the ground.... I'm sure you know what I'm talking about)....so we clicked and rewarded the "bow in the box" for about 10 minutes last night.

Now he won't bow without being in the stupid box.   So at some point I guess that's a behavior to be "fixed".  :=(

Not sure where all this is going to take us!

But it's a fun, enthustiastic, game to play with your dog and allowing the dog to offer up the behaviors makes him use his head.   Here's a link which gives an overview if you're interested.

Cameo and Zip love the box here, it has all the toys in it (for a little while a day) and they crawl in there and play. Now if I could just get them to pick their toys up and put them back in the box I'll have done something. Bailey you did good boy, now you just have to learn to bow without the box. Great job Nora, as always. Love from your god-dogs and the entire Palm Bay Rat Pack.

I did the "jump in the box" trick with Button for her first clicker trick. She thought that was pretty slick. She had this "You mean all I have to do to get that treat is jump in this box?" look on her face. She must have thought I was sure stupid. LOL Then I taught her to pick up a little handled wicker basket. She caught on to both tricks very quickly, in only 1-2 graduated behavior steps and only 5-10 reps. But within a week, she'd get so excited at the sight of the clicker it was hard to contain her sometimes! LOL
