I am no expert photographer, but am pretty excited with these photos. We have at least two, maybe three, red-tailed hawks in our woods. They have been out every afternoon in the trees near our lake. Yesterday I got the opportunity to get some pretty good photos. I think, from observing, this is an immature hawk with parent(s). It sits in the tree and calls. The other hawks flies off, then comes back lands in a tree and calls to it. Eventually it flies over. I think the parent is hunting and coming back to feed. In one photo, I think the parent is actually feeding the youngster, though it is a back view. I discovered later they sit in a tree close to our railroad tram, so the close up is from there. I am going to try to get more from that vantage point.
1. From the lake tram -- truly eye-to-eye
2. This must be a southern belle red tailed, her pantaloons are showing!
3. I believe this is the feeding photo -- if I'd just been on the tram I would have gotten it front view -- this was lakeview |

thanks y'all -- he was back again today - I have a feeling mama and daddy or leaving him on his own now -- he cried a lot but I never saw them come to feed and he flew around and circled. He sat right across from me in the tram car - but he was up in the woods more with the sun shining from behind, so they are okay, but not worth posting here. I did get one pretty good shot of him circle overhead in the woods. He is so awesome - or she! |

| Astounding photos, Jan! We have hawks flying in our residential neighborhood with some regularity. One was soaring a couple yards down from us last evening. They're very common in Texas. Never been close enough to tell what variety they are, though. |

Well, I am thinking this is red-tailed, eventhough its tail is not red yet. The youngsters tails are not red (you can see the reddish tail from below in flight). I'm am basically judging it as a red-tailed because of it's size. It seems to large to be a sharp-shinned or Cooper's hawk. Again, no expert and I'd love anyone's thoughts, but we have lots of red-tails around here, and its other markings and coloring seem right for that species. I so love to watch them and this has been a real treat. No idea how long he will live in our woods, but I'm enjoying it while I can!

Ah, thanks. I looked cooper's hawk, but thought they might be smaller -- do you know their size? That could be it, though, as no red tail in sight.
I ended up sick at my stomach (hmmm) this afternoon and couldn't go down to look for them. maybe tomorrow |

A medium crow-size hawk (avg.14-20" long) with a dark gray back, a rusty-barred breast, dark cap, and a long, rounded tail.
They also can vary in size depending on where they live.

| Beautiful creatures and beautiful pics! I get to see hawks, Osprey and occasionally bald eagles just blocks from our palce, but have never had a camera with me to take picutes. I always worry when the eagles are out- they are big enough to carry off a 13lb rattie! |

Beautiful photos, Jan!!! We have a lot of Red-Tailed and Coopers Hawks around here, and you can usually tell the difference in the 2 by their tails, and also by their size in comparison with each other. Red-Tailed hawks, of course have that reddish brown tail, but it also is shorter and more fanned than a Coopers hawk. The tail of a Coopers hawk is longer and will have those dark bars across the white feathers.
I love the ones where he is looking you right in the eye! Excellent photo~
ps---if you listen to the screech they make, and imitate it, they will often "talk" back to you. Just a little FYI |

Beautiful creatures. We have some hawks around the wooded area surrounding a part of the neighborhood. They sure keep the rabbit population down. A friend told me she had a hawk sitting on her martin house at her lake home. It actually tried to get in the house but the martins literally chased and flew after the hawk all the way to the other side of the lake. She said it was quite a spectacle |
