I've had my rattie Molly for a little over a year now, and she's just precious!

I took her to the vet today for her annual checkup and shots. Her belly was broken out pretty badly and she has been rubbing her belly along across the carpet and scratching a lot. So I asked the doctor about it. I told her that I noticed it start when we moved into our new house last month.  She said that Molly could br having a reaction to the new carpet in our house, and that Ratties were prone to allergies...

Does anyone else have experience with this? If so, how do you manage the allergies on a daily basis??

Thanks in advance! I'm so glad to find this board!

Benedryl, or get a new area rug to put over that one, that maybe she will not be allergic to. Could try changing her food to one that is good for keeping allegies down.

It does sound like something in the new house since it started then....did anything change around that time? Did you start her on a new food? The children's benedryl should help if it's an allergy and also lotoradine (generic Claritin but be sure it's not the Claritin D type with decongestant in it).

And yes, ratties are prone to allergies. I have a 3 yr. old named Mayfly who has allergies. I just keep her away from what's she's allergic to and when she comes in contact with something then she gets Benedryl.

Thank you for the quick replies!

I forgot to mention that the vet said to give her benedryl, which I did and she's not scratching as much.

The house has new carpet throughout, so unfortunately it's not something I can cover up... However, once the carpet goes bad, it's going to be replaced with hardwood. lol!

Mary Beth- We didn't change anything else around the time this started... same food, bed, etc...

Thank you both for the info! I'm hoping that this is something I can help her with... I hate seeing her suffering!

Maybe it's something about the "newness" of the carpet that will wear off eventually or she will build a tolerance to it. I hope so!

You're right, it could be the newness of it... I'm going to trying shampooing them and seeing what happens!

Is it ok to give them the Benedryl daily, or should you only do it for a specific amount of time?? Would I be able to do it with the Claritin if needed? Sorry for all the questions!

Check out this thread about human meds ok for dogs.  But yes, I've given both Claritin and Children's Benedryl daily to my dogs after my vet said it was fine to do that.  (Just make sure the Claritin/Lotoradine is not the "D" kind!)  With Mayfly she has horrible allergies to the grass pollen and she's gotten Benedryl every day for a couple of weeks with no ill effects....and it does really help her watery eyes and itchies.

Wow, that's a cool article! Thank you so much for posting the link!

And I'm glad to hear that you've given your pups the meds... She may have to stay on it for a while if it continues to flare up. I'm so glad it works too... who would have thought?!

Thank you SO much for all the help, I really appreciate it!!
