I am a mac user (and tech). I prefer to use Safari for my browser. I can read but not reply to posts in Safari. I have to have a seperate browser (firefox) just to be able to do this. Is there anyway that the forum software can be updated to a version that works with the current version of Safari? Im running 10.5.3 of the OS.

Hello.  First, let me state that I am not an admin of this site and am not speaking for them in any way, but I do know that this web site is run on IIS 6.0 (Microsoft Windows Server 2003)  because I saw it in a network trace I took for other reasons, and the problem may be related to some proprietary APIs or just some special Mac-thing that Safari uses, which may not be fully compatible with other servers.  While the latest version on IIS in 7.0 (In Windows Server 2008), I don't know if that resolves any compatibility issues with Safari.

Since IIS 6.0 is well established (read: heavily used on teh Intrenets) and is RFC compliant, I'd venture a +GUESS+ that Safari tries to do something unique and proprietary which results in the failure.

Can you go into the options of the browser and tweak the settings - particularly regarding HTTP and POST, and see if that improves the compatibility?  If nothing helps, let me know by PM and give me some specifics to work with - like and error message, and I'll do some digging and see what I can find.

The admins may be able to shed some more light on this as well.

I dont get error messages actually I just click submit and it reloads the page and my response is gone and not posted. This honestly is extremely suprising to me because I have been and continue to be on a large number of message boards and forums and never have issues. They use IIS here on campus and it seems to be frequently broken or have security issues lol. Im willing to bet most of the internets is run on linux/unix/bsd etc not on windows because it would be down a lot Ok im sorry I couldnt hold it back.

My job is very boring at times thus I have a large amount of time for forums (macs dont break often, eheh). Actually I support Windows too although I dont enjoy it. I am imaging dual boot Macs as I type

I'm using Safari...

I'm surprised at the comment of proprietary use targeted at something other than microsoft hehe. It's usually due to active x and IE proprietary crap that sites break on browsers like safari, not the other way around. Apple actually prided themselves on making safari as web/rfc compliant as possible.

So quick reply works from safari but not "add reply". I usually use add reply because I got used to adding pics or links.

Can't edit my post, wanted to add that I also did my reply w/ quick reply. Using The normal reply gives me the same problem of wiping out my reply and giving me a blank reply page.

I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this post...now my head is hurting from trying to figure out all the tech terms.  All I have to say is, Internet Explorer NEVER has any problems with RT.com

oh, wait, was I not supposed to understand this? It made sense to me.

There may be something with the timeouts or how the traffic is handled on the site. I know sometimes after I hit submit, I have to open another tab to a different site and work there for a bit, then come back to the site and it will have gone through. So if your browser is timing out before the site responds, that could have something to do with it.

I am using firefox on XP, and this site is the only one I have problems with.

It IS on windows, maybe it needs to be rebooted! haha, I just had to get my jab in.

This has nothing to do with IIS6 (Mitch, this wouldn't be an http issue but a javascript one), and it has nothing to do with ActiveX (we don't use ActiveX here).
My guess is that Safari doesn't like something about the javascript that is used in the forums (ie, the javascript that executes when the Submit button is clicked).

Questions for you:

1. Do you get the problem if you use the Quick Reply box *AND* if you use the full "Add Reply" editor?
2. I just made a (temporary?) change to the off-topic forums, can you see if the same problem happens in the cooking forum, for example? Just do a test reply there and let me know.

Oh.  That makes sense, since Java is a commonly use language and is  sometimes misinterpreted by lesser browsers, or simply... browsers that must interpret the results of others as wrong and complain about it.

If I can help in any way in figuring out what  IS WRONG WITH the Apple Saforariie in understanding Sun's Java, please let me know.

When I use the quick reply and I hit Submit, sometimes it doesn't post. Then when I look, someone else posted at the same time, so maybe theirs got there first and dumped my reply or something....

Its new. I am running 10.5.3 (10.5.4 is out but not willing to upgrade yet need to test on non production machine).

It doesnt matter what category it is, quick reply works, regular add reply does not. Also I can not add a new topic.
Ive also tried on 3 computers (macbook pro, imac (intel) and a g5 tower) all have the same OS version and all have the same issue.

Like I said I use tons of different forums and dont have problems but I guess they generally run more standardized forum software such as phpbb.

ok, it is working in the just chat area to add reply so it does have to do with all the functions available when using the full reply (or i assume the new topic). I might be able to get to a machine this afternoon where i can try 10.5.4 on and Ill let you know about the other forums on that machine
