HI, i'm new here and i have a 3 yr old female rat terrier named Pixy. I sometimes call her Fatty McFee..... I love her to pieces and every trait i have read up on the breed is so true.  I hope to add more soon and ask questions . My Pixy is addicted to Pizza, "cookies" and goes after my coffee whenever she can. She knows the word "Pizza" , "go for ride", "gotta pee?", "cookie", " you coming under?" (meaning under the blanket-haahaa) and when ever i start by saying "you wanna.........???" she perks up and goes bonkers...

The only thing that i never understood about her is i had gotten her ay 14 wks old, took her to a doggie park the 1st time as i heard about socializing her.......so long story short a 6 mos old Boxer trampled her and almost picked her up in his mouth and shook her. My poor pup was mortified after that incident and so was i. I tried to get her to socialize after that in the dog park but she never liked it and wouldnt let any dog near her w/o snarling and growling. I notice this more while in enclosed spaces but she is better now. While in a pet store if someone or another dog approaches she hides behind me ...but if we are out in an open area she is much better like an open park or yard. I never know who she will like or not like.she is very picky! Once she and a Corgi ran around in circles after meeting in a yard where i lived......it was too funny to see her actually have a good time chasing another dog and being chased.

So do you think it was my lack of knowledge or training getting her to be more social? Or did that one incident just scar her for life? I'm a 1st time dog owner too but had pets all my life...

I am not sure about the socializing part as I have never encountered that problem with either of mine but wanted to say welcome to you. Love the name FattyMcFee hope ya stick around and share pics!!

Thanks! Well i have some pics for sure.........but when i got Pixy she was supposed to be the BF's dog but she grew attached to me instead. So her got a male Rattie 6 months later and he was complete opposite of her. She loved car rides and he didnt, she didnt like strangers and he would be all over them and other dogs. I guess it'll be a mystery but she is getting better w/ppl in general but if she is in the car w/me you dont even dare walk past or approach the car! I swear she'd kill someone.............for a small dog Fat or not that snarl/bark is scary!

i would say it was the incident in the park with another dog.I think of it this way if i was her and a larger(i assume he was bigger) dog trampled me and almost had me in his mouth i would be very timid about other dogs not knowing if they would do the same thing as that first dog did.Is it just bigger dogs she is afraid of or all dogs in general?

Just call Dani mom to a Monster on 4 legs we call BB

So do you have 2? A male and Female?

My male dog is a little of the hefty side too, we love through food in our house but he is on a diet now, just because he needs to be more active!

LOL................well the boxer was 6 mos and she was 14 wks........so it was 3 times her size at least.

As for other dogs, she seems to be picky at times. Like once in Petco a chihuahua puppy wanted to play w/her and Pixy hid behind me! Too funny! Other times a larger breed will approach her and she'll actually let them sniff her.............odd?? She is that way w/people too! I never know who she will like...........haahaa

WELCOME!!! I bet Nora will have some good advice for you.

I would think that even at 3, and the one bad experience you could work with her to become more socialized, less timid, less snappy at other dogs and even comfortable around other dogs. How does she do with the BF's male? (maybe they don't live in the same house?) The car thing sounds like a territorial issue not an issue related to fear or her dog park iexperience. I know of a technique I watched our dog trainer use on a dog in class that did the same thing on the street to both people and dogs. Some may not agree with it, but man what a huge difference in this dog in just 6 weeks. She was awarded the "most improved dog" award last night. If you're interested, let me know and I'll PM you.

HI Dink! Thanks for the welcome.........and thanks for the compliment.

And Bratty.yeah Pixy needs a serious diet too. Her knees are bad and i cant afford surgery right now but i need her to lose weight. I'm a very bad Mommy w/treats.

Strangely enough she actually ran thru the woods after my BF last sunday, i dont know what got into her but she started to run and i was worried she'd hurt a knee but she didnt! She had such a great time in the woods, i think maybe thats the key-as for her exercise routine. She'll toss a toy or chase a ball in the park for 5 minutes tops. But she loves going on adventures w/me so i think more hiking and camping is good for her. I was worried about her climbing on large rocks but she's getting pretty good....she jumps over to me and i catch her so she is getting the idea down. (she isnt jumping more than a few inches from my reach) ...........i didnt want anyone thinking i'd jeopordize her safety.........i'm a worry wort!

Ratsrule: She did get along w/the BF's dog although territorial over food and bones........we split up when PIxy was 2 and the other dog "chewbaka" was 1 1/2......i felt so bad for his dog so i started taking them both to the park because chewbaka never got to go socialize anywhere. Ah well.........my only hope is my ex's dog is doing well...........he grew attached to me towards the end of the relationship and both dogs slept w/me at night..........;o)) I think it upset my ex........

Welcome to you and Pixy! Can't wait to see more pics of Pixy and hear lots of Pixy stories.

I'm sure that park incident at 14 mos. scared her bad! Button had a big dog pin he down and about to reach for the neck. Scared the padookey outta ME, but she didn't seem to be traumatized by it at all. I think the dumb girl thought he was just playing! She's OK with other dogs. Zipper, my stray rescue, however, have many other issues with other dogs. So I suspect she had some bad street experiences before we adopted her.

I live in Central Texas and have two females. Like you guys, we just love them both to death. They simply make our day and are sorely missed when not here for any reason.

Welcome to you and Pixy, my Bailey was attacked by 2 rottweilers a couple years ago and I thought she'd be scarred for life too, but she is finally doing better around other dogs. Post more pictures of Pixy soon.

Hi and welcome!  Pixy sure is a cutie.  My rattie, Marley, who is a rescue likes some dogs and other he can't stand.  There is no rhyme or reason to his likes/dislikes.  I think he had some bad experiences before being rescued.  Anyway, welcome.  We love pictures
