So after all this talk about what everyone gives their dogs, I was wondering what and how often.  I've heard eggs, oatmeal, yogurt etc.  So what does everone give their dogs, how much to give and how often do you give it??  Thanks

I give mine eggs once or twice a week, fresh carrots and snap peas several times a week (small amount though), oatmeal about once a week (BTW oatmeal will really put the weight on them even w/o sugar and milk). Yogurt only for tummy upset.   A little salmon about once a week when I eat it with a salad.

I have given eggs, he likes those.  Carrots too but he makes a mess!!! What about tuna?  I am not a fish person so unless I by salmon for him (my hubby would think I was nuts) I would never have it around, tuna neither for that matter.

I've given mine a little tuna, too, when I have it....sans mayo of course. Don't know that it has the same omega 3 benefits as salmon, though, but they like it.

I've heard tuna isn't good because of heavy metals contamination (mercury). Salmon is ok if it is caught wild but not farmed. A better and cheaper alternative is canned sardines or mackerel.  I'm not a fish person either so I just give fish oil supplements. I use Seapet omega 3 fish oil with vitamin E. It's purified to take out contaminants. Some just puncture drug store-bought omega 3 gelcaps and squirt it on the food. That's ok but vitamin E should also be added.

Thanks Ski, I knew I had heard something negative about tuna, which is why they only get teeny bites of it.

I give Russ Brewer's Yeast tablets- has Omega 3 fatty acids and supposedly the Brewer' Yeast acts as a natural flea repellant and is good for the coat. He thinks they are a great treat. Every morning he licks out my yogurt container, that's probably a teaspoon a day. Whenever I cook spinach or brussel sprouts he gets a small amount- he loves them.

I have heard that tuna only in tiny amounts. I think it can give diarrhea if the dog isn't used to it.

This may sound funny or be a stupid question, but how do you give them the eggs?  raw or cooked? scrambled or sunny-side up  j/k.... I was thinking of giving them to Mic but just thought... "I have no idea" so I better ask!  Also, what do they do for dogs?  And what do the carrots do for dogs?  My old dog used to gobble carrots up like crazy!  But Mic has never tried one yet...

Also, is there a good supplement to help lose weight, because Mic could lose a bit... since he's been couped up in the house out of the sun we're starting to notice a little chubs on him   We've cut down on his food a little and try to play with him more indoors, but it's just not the same.

I don't think how they're cooked matters as far as the eggs.  Just don't fry them in icky grease and if you make scrambled eggs be careful of the milk (I use a tiny bit of non-dairy creamer instead).  My husband laughs at me 'cause when I fry them eggs I do the sunny side up thing and don't break the yolks - like they care.

Don't know what carrots do for them (if anything) but mine all love baby carrots.  Also snap peas, fresh green beans, pears, black-eyed peas, garbanzo beans....heck no wonder Skipper had a "gas attack"!

I don't like weight control foods. I feed Innova EVO reduced fat but the fat content is "reduced" to 15.5%, which is near normal for a regular food. The protein is 52%. Weight control foods reduce protein and fat, which dogs need. I went thru enough low fat/protein food with Lucky to see it didn't work with him. I would feed a food with enough protein (at least 24 or 25%) and just feed less. I slice up green beans and add water to help fill him up. Adding an egg is a good way to add protein too. Some people drop an entire egg in the bowl. I think I would at least break it, it might be less messy. I heard the shells were good too.

If the dogs get the shells they will eat the eggs that the hens lay that I want for my human kids. I don't give egg shells. I give liver boiled untill solid then diced up. I give it to breeding females and pregnant females and pups. If you give more than 1/4 cup a day they will get the runs bad, so limit the amount. I also give my dogs vegetable water from boiled vegetables that we eat. The water has alot of the vitimens from the vegetables and the dogs all seem to look forward to it and will eat their food better with veg water on it.
