Spencer was playing with his hot wheels track, and every time he sent a car down the track, Murphy freaked out! He jumped up in my lap and pressed agenst me, and then climbed up on my shoulders. He was trembling.
Something about the sound of the cars going down the track really messes with him. He won't go in the Media Room if the track is set up. It's odd, because he is so stupidly fearless when it comes to things he should stay away from. |

Welcome to the world of canines, Mitch! LOL If you want to desensitize Murphy to the hot wheels track... you can. Have him in the room and start it up. when he starts trembling... lay your hand on his back and stroke him and give him a treat. Stay in there with him and keep doing this... a little every day... Don't "coddle" him... have him on a leash and talk calmly to him... all the while diverting his attention from the track to you....and the good things you have to offer! |

| I guess all dogs are afraid of different things. Taz loves toy cars. When I opened my Cherrios the other day there was a red plastic Go Speed Racer toy in it that he loves to chase and carry around. Too bad Taz doesn't have a little boy to play with. |

| Murphy probably heard rumors of beatings with a hot wheels track and is having doggie nightmares. I had a friend growing up who had 4 brothers - wild children and their mama was always chasing someone with a hot wheels track (or whatever else she could grab). I suppose it smacks of abuse but those boys really loved getting their mom going. |

| Along with Nora's advice, you might also try - very matter of factly (not sweet & mushy) saying to him "it's okay". I've been doing that with my little Bonnie since getting her because she was so nervous and afraid of every little noise she heard. She's calmed down so much since last week. I think letting her know she's okay (not coddling) and acting like whatever has her nervous is No Big Deal has really helped! Murphy will be fine. |

Hmm. Condesending much, Nora?
Murphy's not afraid of vacuums or other noisy things. I just thought it was odd that of all things to be afraid of, hot wheels! Funny dog. |

Get a stuffed mouse cat toy, and glue it to the top of the hotwheels, and see if he thinks it is a rat to chase...You know, they are "Rat Terriers", not "Hot Wheel Terriers"! |

HA!! Of course that might backfire... he may become terrified of rats!

Ok, then get a remote control one, so you can start it out slow, then speed it up, once he gets used to it...You will have a "Speedy Gonzalez Rattie", in no time!

I once had a horse who was afraid of birds, particularly geese. If he so much as heard a goose honk in earshot, he would tremble and sweat and occasionally break his cross-ties.
On the other hand, he thought snakes were AWESOME!! |

| Hey Murphy! Amos here. Just wanted to tell you that you don't need to be askeered of those Hot Wheels. They are FUN to play with. Everytime the little boy leaves one on the floor (and he does it ALOT) I grab it up and hide and chew it up quick! If I'm not quick, the mama takes it away from me! She takes all the fun stuff away!!! |

| HAHAHA Rat Terriers are funny dogs - that's why we love them right?? My girls LOVE cars of course, chase, chew, repeat. We recently bought my 9 yr old those little white poppers that you throw at the ground. The girls RUN as fast as they can and hide in their house or crate. We certainly aren't throwing them near the girls but boy they don't like that sound! This may be a great tool for when they don't FEEL like going into the kennel! Only kidding! As a few others told you, you can desensitize them to anything, just let them know it's nothing to be afraid of but don't grab them up like it is scary and they'll get over it =) |

They may be "rat terriers", but they're certainly not "mouse terriers". We have a field across the street and whenever it's worked on the mice come flooding into the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the only one who goes after them is our brussels griffon - llhaso mix. Apparently, they don't do "mouse work" (my wife's joke, not mine. please don't hit me).....ow....she just did.... |
|
Do they really love us or are we just walking food dispensers? |
