So, before I got Bonie, I was told that she is a submissive pee-er and since I've had her have only witnessed this once, and witnessed once what I would call an excitement peeing incident.  She is not fully housetrained- but doing really well I think since she's only had accidents the first couple of days after her arrival- and none in the past 4 days.

However, last night was altogether different and I'm curious to see what others think happened- or what kind of peeing this was so I can try to figure out how to handle it.

Bonnie and Chloe were asleep on my bed last night- as usual.  My son got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom (which is unusual!) and my bedroom door was open to the hall so Bonnie heard him and immediately started to barking at the noise in the dark. Chloe then started to bark and I'm telling them to both be quiet and then told my son to hurry up and say something so they knew it was him and not something else they should be warning me about.  As soon as Bonnie heard his voice she settled down, but then jumped off my bed and ran into his room just as he was getting back into bed.  I'm calling Bonnie back to bed, and the next thing I hear my son cussing about the blankety-blank dog- and I ask what's wrong.  She'd gone in and peed on his bed- and it got on him too.  I asked if it was a little or a lot- he said a lot, so I don't think it was submiossive, or excitement since she seemed to have emptied her bladder- but then again it was the middle of the night- so that's what she had in her.

So, what I am trying to figure out- is what may have prompted/caused this behavior in her.  Do you think it was marking out of fear, protectiveness, bonding, or was it submissive, excitement or???  Any ideas?    I read the Urine marking reasons thread posted- but not sure how to "handle" since I don't know yet, what to call this.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Terri, not real sure on that one. When we got Alice we had some issues with her house breaking. Sometimes she would pee right in front of me. I don't know why. I would give her a NO and right outside with praise out the wazoo. She finally got it. It is still very new to Bonnie, maybe she was scared, maybe she just had to go, I don't know. Can you close your door as to avoid this situation again??  I hope your son wasn't too mad!!  Maybe someone will know more but I am not sure, I am chalking it up to newness.

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

I'm thinking she just got scared too- and yes I can close my door (it usually is) but I'm not really sure why she decided to run in to his room. But because she did, that's why I wonder if it was a submissive act, to say, I know it was you, and you are alpha. I don't know.

He was mad (cranky), but didn't even mention it this morning, so he's not holding a grudge or anything. He loves the little cuddle bug as much as I do!

Maybe she wanted to join in--since you son got up. When I first got nora, her accidents sometimes seemed to be promted by our "activities".

I think it is fear and dominace pee

it almost sounds as if she is confused and not sure where she stands in the family....what rank....who comes first and how does she become more dominant..or what is her rank and she needs to know where and why she is the lesser of the ranking.....but I have not been around to really know your situation...I hope all goes well.....not sure about the currsing and your sons age....your post about it all sounds like you are frustrated.....I wish you all the luck and hope that all goes well.....good luck Milly

how old? until 5 months old if my babies were asleep and tehn suddenly woke up they had to go!!! i would be outisde no matter what time it was... your son was awake and up... she went to him to go. thats my theory. and dogs, all dogs, love to pee on beds for some reason. its marking the higher ground (dominance thing) so i agree as far as what others have said about pecking order in teh family. she sees your son as an equal and just tried to dominate him alil as well.

If my foster dog Morgandy wakes up during the night for any reason I take her straight outside...once they're awake they realize they have to pee.  I still take Mayfly out too if she wakes up during the night.

Don't agree that all dogs love to pee on beds....normally dogs don't like to pee where they sleep!

Don't agree that all dogs love to pee on beds....normally dogs don't like to pee where they sleep!  no, not all of course... but thats IF they sleep  in the bed. before we allowed them to sleep with us the bryson would Pee on the bed whenever we put him up there. then once he "slept" with us it cahnged.

Yeah, probably most adult dogs don't have to pee during the night but Mayfly has a habit of sometimes not peeing right before bed so if she wakes up during the night I take her out.  Not every night but a couple of times a week.  None of my other adults need to go out if woken up (4).

Hi all- thanks for the thoughts/input etc. Nope, I'm not frustrated, just curious about the behavior. Bonnie is somewhere between 6 & 9 mo. When she sleeps all night she has no trouble staying dry and has never peed in my bed, if she wakes int he middle fo the night, I let her out the door (in my bedroom) and she goes and comes right back to bed to sleep. After talking to my son some more about what Bonnie did, I now think she went to him to say hi (after she realized he wasn't stranger danger) she jumped into bed with him, but he shooed her off, then she jumped back up and then peed. So I think she got a bit confused and just could't hold it is all. I'm also thinking we probably won't have many of these occurances (I hope) since I am keeping my door shut so that when she does get up I can let her out as usual. I was just really out of it when this happened, and didn't get up right away like I normally do.

Oh- and I hope she isn't terribly confused about her ranking, but suppose it's possible given that we've only had her a total of 2 weeks today. I've been really careful about making sure Chloe (my first) is number one over her, so that they both know each others place and to prevent any squabbling between the 2 and so far- everyone seems happy. I really am thinking she just got scared by his getting up (since he doesn't normally) and once she was there in his room, got confused and just decided she couldn't hold it. Thanks again for everyone's imput. I so appreciate it.

i think withi t being said you have had her for 2 weeks that anything is possible and it isnt a big deal either way. the"jumping" could have made her have to go all of a sudden. i wouldnt put anything thought to it unless it becomes repetitive.
