I think Luby is depressed...
She's moping around, sleeping ALL the time, staring blankly at things. She won't play with her toys. I even bought new ones for her.
She's eating well, and she's active around my parents' dog, but when we come home, it's back to gloom and doom.
I want to cry.
She's on meds for her poop, which worked out this time. She's got normal poo now. We go back for a recheck today, so I hope it's something medical that will stop when the meds are done. But what if it's not?
How do I make her happy again?
Has anyone else dealt with depression in their ratties? |

| I know it happens but more often it's a health issue. I hope the docs figure it out for her. |

| I did when Jack was on Prednisone, he returned to his old self after that. What meds is she on? I would say if it doesn't let up it could be something medical so worth checking into. How much longer does she have to be on her meds? |

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your pup, but try not to think the worst just yet. Since you're going in the see the vet today see if they agree, and what they suggest. Maybe this is just a side effect from the meds and will go away once the meds stop? Also, try not to be sad around Luby (and I'm not saying you are) These guys are so smart, they pick up on our moods and feelings about/towards them. So, if you are happy go lucky around Luby, she should pick up on that and that may help her mood. I hope things get better for Luby. Please keep us posted. |

I don't know what meds Luby is on... (CUTE avatar btw) but it COULD be not enough exercise? I don't know how much exercise she's getting, but oftentimes if a dog isn't exercised enough, he/she will become more subdued... If that's not the issue, I'd check with your vet. |

| I would almost be 100 percent sure it was the Pred. It really can take the life out of them. Mention it to the vet, see what they say, but I am sure you will see the difference after she is done with the meds. |

How much longer does she need to be on pred? I know it's necessary sometimes, but I don't like how it affects my dogs...they get mopey, are total chow hounds, drink tons of water, and basically just aren't their normal happy selves. Once your pup is off the pred, you should see her return to normal, if not, then you need to check back with the vet again. |

We've got at least another week to go.
At least now, it's not a whole tab every day. Today starts the weaning off of it. |

| I hope she starts returning to normal as you lower the dosage. I had a cat who was on medication for an infection. She, too, moped, but returned to her normal, sweet (sometimes not-so-sweet) self once she was off the medicine. |

| from my floor's standpoint, i hope all the symptoms stop when the pred is done. she's drinking what seems like gallons a day and is consequently peeing every half hour. we've had accident after accident in the house because we just can't seem to catch her. and i think she gets caught off guard too, with not enough time to let us know. |

| once again the pred might have a drying sensation and cause the drinking and peeing--It is an effective drug I quess--personally I dislike it--but of course there must be a compelling reason to use it |
