Hi all,

My wife and I are owned by a 2 1/2 year old female Rat Terrier named Maggie.  We got her from the Ft. Worth TX humane society as a puppy so we do not know much about her heritage.  Though there have been times when my wife and I have wanted to pull our hair out of our heads, Maggie is by far the greatest dog that has ever owned me.

I came here looking for solutions to an excessive itching and licking problem.  I found some good tips, so many many thanks for that.  I don't know if I will be a regular here as my job and home life leave little time for anything else, but I look forward reading about all of your experiences with these great dogs.

Welcome. Visit when you can. I live in Central Florida, but my 19 yr old daughter is visiting my relatives in Forney, Texas right now. Her plane leaves tomorrow night from DFW to come home, after being there a week.

Itching and excessive licking. Either dry skin or allergies? Make sure to give supplements of fish oils if not provided by food. What kind of food are you giving? SO MANY dog foods out there are are made from really bad stuff. Take some time to investigate.

Welcome!

She has been on Purina Beneful "Healthy Radiance" for some time. I am getting the impression that this could possibly be a source of her problem. We are going to try some of the suggested foods and hope for good results. It kills me to see her like this. She is still her crazy, joyful self, but you can tell she is fighting it.

Welcome! Yeah, she probably has grain allergies...beneful's first ingredient is corn, which is the most common grain that ratties are allergic too. There are many great grain-free foods...switching foods should help her.

A big Texas-size WELCOME to ya!    We live down in Temple near Austin.  That's a handsome brindle you'vve got there!  Look forward to getting to know you and your pup.  We're pic addicts around here, so we would love to see more pics of your baby!  My two girls, Button and Zipper there are 2 and 4 years old.  You'll love this site.  Lots of great people and great advice on raising ratties.

If you have time to read up on feeding better food - may I suggest 'Pet Food Nation'. It really changed my views on commercial pet food even though I was already feeding grain free food to mine. Good luck to you- that's a beautiful girl you have there.

Hello and welcome to the site!! Can't wait to see pictures of your furkid!
It could be a rash or food allergy. Rat Terriers seem to be prone to grain allergies. Beneful is a lower quality food...it contains corn and wheat, two poorly digested grains that are believed to be the source of many grain allergies. It also had 'by-product meal' which are lower quality sources of protein that is usually made up of feet, beaks, heads, ect. It also has two undetermined animal sources, 'animal digest' and 'animal fat' which can come from ANY animal, such as 4D animals (dead diseased disabled and dying) roadkill, dead zoo animals, and even euthanized cats and dogs. "Menadione sodium bisulfite complex" or Vitamin K3 has been linked to many health issues, such as kidney diseases.
Have a look at dogfoodproject.com . it has a lot of good information on there!

melo...yes, grain free means no rice.

Welcome from me, and from a hairless-chested 7 lbs. rattie named Pixie who found my husband wandering the Wal-Mart parking lot alone back in March
I concur that Beneful is probably part of the problem, if not all of it.
