If people who give up their dogs for reasons such as I left my boyfriend/husband, or I am moving or now I have kids and all that other stuff you see on here. Do these people get another dog(s)?  I think there should be a law saying once you surrender one dog NO MORE FOR YOU!!!

Hopefully they have learned that it just isn't the right time in their lives to own a pet. But I'll bet a lot of them do get other pets.

My sister decided to give up her dog because lack of time etc. She moved and got another pet, but not a dog this time, a cat. I suppose its better for her to have a low maintenance pet, but she doesnt really like animals all too much. She doesn't get the bond that is possible between a girl and her dog =)

I've had two friends who were the worst dog "owners" i've ever known. One of them bought a $1000 yorkie, and decided the next day she didn't want it, and was genuinely MAD that the pet store (yes, PUPPYMILLPETSTORE!) wouldn't give her her full $$ back. The other got an English Bulldog from a breeder, brought it home brought it back 2 hours later. When I asked her why (i was already looking forward to Joleigh having a nother doggy buddy) she says that it breathed too loud and gave her a migraine. I'm honestly GLAD she didn't keep it, because she doesn't understand that you cant just keep 'em locked up all day and feed 'em a bit & them be fine.

Perhaps if there were laws in place on owning a pet, fewer animals would end up being surrendered, abandoned, etc.?  If only ALL shelters, pet stores, breeders, rescues and private homes/sellers were REQUIRED to do a check (like Ratbones does) on potential pet owners.  I bet if that were the case,  not only would there be fewer animals going to the wrong homes, but fewer animals being given up for the wrong reasons, being abused, abandoned, etc.

Some people deserve second chances.  If there was a really good reason you had to surrender your pet, and later wanted to get another, I think you should be able to.  Not everyone who surrenders a pet is bad or incapable of ever providing a loving forever home. Sometimes people get animals before they're really ready to be pet owners.  Sometimes life throws things at us that we can't predict and can't manage and it changes things for us even if we don't like it.  Who knows... a second chance could make a deserving animal very happy.

I agree with Terri about giving some people second chances. I'm a much better pet owner now that I was 20 years ago.

I'll tell any one who ask me to find them a good breeder or resque site to get a dog from to first lookinto the breed that they might want, secondly can you afford the bills, do you want and have the time for that pet. If they don't even want to take the time or cant answer yes to those I tell them that right now is not the time to have a pet. Most of the people I'vetalked to are very understanding about this, my friends have thanked me for pointing out these issues to them. Some just lauphed about my insistance that they do this but I will keep insiting no matter what.

There are indeed certain circumstances where surrendering an animal is unavoidable.   AFTER all others avenues have been existed!   But too many people don't try to find homes or work on problems, they just give them up.  Then go and get others ones just to repeat the patten over and over.  These are the people who don't deserve the right to have any more.    One of my biggest pet peeves is let mom get preggers and when the babies are weaned keep a baby and give mom up.

When I was just 17, I brought the cuttest (free) puppy home. Problem was, I had no business bringing her home with me because I was too imature, too broke, and too busy to care for her. She ended up in a really good home and she DESERVED to be surrendered by me. Boy, if I hadn't had the chance now, to have my little Chloe and Bonnie Bon-Bon, I would be sooooooooooooo sad.

That's another thing there should be laws on...... mandatory spaying and neutering!!! Then there wouldn't be so many babies needing homes~!

Well good grief, there is no law about making sure people are ready for children, there certainly won't be one about doggies/pets. Should be but I dont' see it happening.

I was gonna say...working in Foster care....a mother can have 4 of her children removed for neglect and can still be popping out babies (true story) No one is going to stop her either!!! grrrrrr
