Ok, well Tim and I are taking a long weekend trip to Atlanta and he seems to think we can just plan everything five minutes before it is to happen. I'm the opposite and I plan everything, plus I've only been on a plane once before when I was 18. So, I have a few questions. First of all, how long before our flight should we get to the airport? I've heard people tell me that they charge for baggage, does anyone know anything about this? What is considered a carry on? I think we'll just bring two suitcases, one big for my stuff and small one for his stuff, but i have this small bag that I wouldn't mind bringing to carry my camera and toiletries in. I'm seriously so clueless when it comes to this stuff! |

Go to the website of the airline you are flying. All your questions are answered there. |

I think 2 hrs before the flight is the usual. If it's not a charter and you want a specific area to sit in, maybe a little sooner so you have more choices for seats. Some if not all airlines are charging for luggage now. I thought I heard $15.00 for each piece but each airline is different. I always carry my camera, a book, handheld game, few toiletties and maybe change of clothes. That is usually shorts and a t-shirt because we go towards the warmer weather. That way if your luggage gets lost, you have something. Most of the time my carry on is on the floor by my feet. I am shocked at how big some of the carry on's are. The upper bins get jammed. The airline website should give you the exact size your carry on should be and any other charges you need to know. |

I've heard there are a few airlines that are charging for baggage now. Can't remember which ones. As for getting to the airport, if it is a fairly busy airport I would plan on getting there a couple hours before your your flight. Lines to check in could be long. If your husbands bag isn't too big he can probably carry it on too. Be careful of the toiletries too. They have some restrictions on those if you carry them on. You may want to do a search on the restrictions online.

Yea, I forgot about the restrictions on some items. It's so goofy and I think it may change depending if your traveling within the states or out of the country, like Mexico. It depends what the other end's restrictions are as well. When we went to Mexico in Feb. They wouldn't allow us to carry water at all past the restricted area. We could purchase water after the check point but NOT allowed to carry it on the plane. Geez...It's not cheap either. |

I would recommend going onto the web and looking at the particluar airline you are flying. Quite honestly, it varies even from airport to airport what they allow.....it's nuts....but some cities seem to be more strict or lax depending..... They are charging for bags but even that varies..... Two hours is about the norm for arrival before your flight. Always good to call ahead before you leave your house to head to the airport to check the status of your flight to see if it is delayed...... All toiletries must be less than 3 oz. sizes and must fit into a clear ziploc bag..... But seriously, just go online to the carrier you are using and they will give you all the info you need. Hope you have a great trip! Lynn |

| I think 2 hours is good too, but he thinks that is ridiculous. I'm going to have to force him. |

You know, it depends on the time of your flight. For example, my husband travels domestically and internationally and usually his flights are VERY early in the morning. He's said he doesn't need to get there 2 hours ahead because it is so early there is hardly anyone in the security lines.....but if his flight is later in the morning or afternoon, he tries to get there earlier because you don't want to be pushing it trying to get through security to your gate..... Me, I'd do two hours just to be safe.... Lynn |

| Are you landing at Hartfield in Atlanta? I think it's called something else now but be prepared - it's huge and almost a city unto itself! We were late for a flight there once and had to run the whole way to the gate....which was a long way and I refused to take the train. |

are there two airports in atlanta? all i know is that we are flying to atlanta, lol. we are flying out of st. louis, so i'm sure the airport is small here. i'm used to a bigger airport, because the last time i flew it was out of o'hare in chicago, and that place is huge. we are flying airtran and according to their website it says to get there 90 minutes before. so that is what we'll do. it also gave me info on how many bags we could bring, which is good. |

Yeah, I was going to say an hour and a half before your flight, depending on what time of day your flight is departing. We usually fly Northwest from Norfolk to Detroit and you can check two suitcases and take one carry on but the suitcases can't be more than a certain weight or they charge you. Good luck! |

Only 1 big airport in Atlanta - now called Hartsfield-Jackson Airport ( they added Jackson for Jesse Jackson).
