So those of you who have been keeping up with Joleigh and I's antics, have known weve had a few issues.  To review:

Last Saturday my grandfather passed away, I didn't mention it, it did not put a strain on me as we were not close, but it has put a strain on my mom.

Last Monday Joleigh got sprayed in the eye with an acidic chemical from a bug (did not find that it could be harmful at the time)

Last Tuesday woke up very early to Joleigh with a severly swollen eye...  I brought her to a number of vets till I could find one who would take her as an emergency, resulted in a very high vet bill but she began making a very quick recovery =) Oh, my car was in the shop too, so I had to borrow my mothers.

Wednesday brought her in again once the swelling went down so that they could see it better.

Friday Joleigh got spayed, which went fine and a *different* vet checked her eye out while she was out, prescribed her 2 new medicines.  Bring her back in two weeks to see progress on eye and whether or not to continue her current medicine, or to begin another one.

Saturday was the whole hellish neighbor experience with a little kid walking into my apartment and picking joleigh up by her stomach, p.s. i didn't know the kid, nor did i give him permission into my apartment.

Sunday I posted asking if it were normal for her to still be tired & acting mopey, she began to seem a bit brighter in the afternoon.  She wouldn't go potty much, but that night and the next morning went a number of times within about 2 hours.

Yesterday, called the vet to ask if I could bring her in as a checkup rather than having to pay for another visit, no, i couldn't.  There began my money worry about how to pay with two upcoming visits to the vet, when I just had two unexpected ones.  Decision was made to go ahead and bring her in today (tuesday) and ill just figure out something with the $$ later.

Also, for the last three weeks my AC has been running nonstop to keep it between 75-85 degrees, mostly staying around 80.  I contacted the apartment maintenance three times last week and the week before, and again yesterday.   All times they claimed to fix it, but either little change or mostly none at all.  Last night it was 90 degrees in my apartment.  I called the "emergency" line for my apartment and they claimed it is not an emergency and I would have to wait until today to call the office during office hours.  P.S. got my $472 ELECTRICITY bill in today. For a 600 square foot apartment.

SO HERES THE LATEST!!

I had to go to my morning class @ 8 today b ecause I have a test tomorrow, and didn't want to miss the review so I made an apt for joleigh @ 11, and I would miss my second class.  As I'm walking around getting ready, Joleigh vomits, so I chunk the whole going to class idea and brought her straight to the vet.  I was thinking she may have some kind of infection or along those lines.  We are in the exam room, and the vet asks me if Joleigh is an outdoor dog.  So we go back inside, we wait while she does the urinalysis, she comes back, says theres no infection, but that she believes she knows whats wrong with joleigh.... wait for it... wait for it... are you ready??  heat exhaustion!!  She says that it seems as if Joleighs getting overheated a few times a day which can be dangerous but at least it's not nearly as bad as she could have been since it can lead to heat stroke... I explained about my apartment and she said thats probably what it is, because it being even 80 degrees in the apartment, having little circulation can make it feel worse for both us and dogs and that it being 10 degrees hotter last night was probably what made her vomit this morning.  She explained to me how to give a cool water enema and explained what to do if I see the signs of it happening again.

I went straight to the apartment office when I got home and explained to them that if my air conditioner wasn't fixed by tomorrow, I'd be getting in touch with a lawyer and plenty of news stations.  Its been about 3 hours since i've been home, and still no sign of anyone.  Joleighs doing fine, I just brought all of my portable fans and brought them into the living room.  There's no damage done to her besides maybe making her more suseptable (sp?) to getting overheated quicker, as long as I keep an eye on her, she will be fine.

i keep my house central air on at 80 degrees!!!! its cool as ever. my house is very well insulated so that helps... but its humidity that really kills (at least in ny). but believe it or not 80* in my house feels like 70* in my moms house. very comfortable. my babies like it too... =/

hope it all gets worked out for you both. do you let her eat ice? mu pups love it.

OMG I would be so pissed at the Appartment manager. Does your local news have a complaint line? Ours does. People can call in about complaints and then the reporters go and talk to who needs to do what and usually since they don't want to look bad on t.v. they get it done. I'ts been really good. I would contact the news. I can see the headline! Apartment Mangager refuses to fix AC and causes dog to get over heated. They should have to pay for the vet bill!

I have a friend who is a paralegal and works for one of the best lawyers here, she does all of his work pretty much hes just the one to go to court, so she'll help me if I go the lawyer route, I also have a friend who works for one of the local news stations, theres not much news around here so generally if its interesting, they'll put it on, and I probably have a better chance since I know someone, I haven't contacted him yet tho, I'm going to wait until tomorrow. I also need to talk to my parents, I haven't discussed any of this with them yet.

OMG, so much in a short time!! Poor Joleigh just not her year huh. I give ice too and they love ti. On really hot days or when I think they are got I give them cool baths and let them run around wet. I know they hate the bath but they act so full of life I know it feels good in the heat!!

Not sure I'd be waiting. Are you actually planning to pay that bill or are you going to call it RENT for the month? That's insane. I'm glad your girl is ok.

i usually give her ice in her bowl just to keep the water cooler. Until she completely heals from the spay I REALLY have to watch her because I need to try to resist having to give her a bath to cool down.

The paralegal friend just e-mailed me, her advice is to first give them a written letter claiming that if they don't fix it within 48 hours, I will hire a professional and that the bill from that and the bill from the vet will be taken out of my future rent. she said legally they dont have to do anything if I just tell them to, that it must be in writing to save my butt from being evicted for being a "threat" to them. After that if they aren't complying, I can file a suit against them for this month and last months rent, along with two additional months rent which would be needed to break my lease, the vet bill and AC man bill, plus some more for personal suffering

Honstly I wouldn't wait, something needs to be done its not healthy for you or Joleigh to be in that type of heat for as long as you have been, you've seen the effects it has on her. Have you thought about yourself. Please do something, I'm sure your parents would back you up and agree with out you having to wait on thier permission to do something about this horrible situation. Just my Opinion

80 degrees inside an apartment in Louisiana is hot! I'm sure you are just wringing wet. Do you have to mail that letter you write and do a return receipt requested to prove that they got it?

Make sure you have a copy of your rental agreement and I would seriously look into renters rights and have a copy of them as well...........I faced the same thing a few years ago but it was about my youngest and heat exhaustion and the lanlord thought he could get away with it because he thought I was an unknowing female............I really put him in his place..............

I would be upset too... and I'm so sorry you're having to go through this, and that Joleigh is having to go through this. You've sure had a lot on your plate over the past few weeks. Wishing I had a magic wand.... *hugs*

so uhm.. whos a hard*butt* and is getting a completely new air conditioning system tomorroww.... that would be me! and Joleigh. =o) BTW, in the process i got the maintenance man fired.
and didn't even need to give them the letter.

SO heres the happy ending. turns out, maintenance dude who has been here 4 times, claimed that nothing was wrong with it, that it was just hotter outside & making it hot inside. Okay, AC dude comes, says the same thing, that nothings wrong with it but the compressor is going out because it's old, but the apartment wont pay for a new one until it goes out completely. I ask him how long that will take and he says weeks, maybe months. okay. He then tells me he will talk to Dana (not the owner, but higher than the manager, only gets involved with the $$ things usually) and see if she will do anything sooner, and he'll get her to call me. (i find out that he's also working for the apt corporation, and isn't an AC guy, just another maintenance guy) I called my parents extremely upset and my mom was like just go over there and talk to her and if they say no, we'll go from there. On my way there I see the guy who just left, I asked if he talker to her, he said yeah he had, but that she said she couldnt do anything sooner. I wasnt ready to give up yet so I go in and talk to her about it.. she asked me what was I talking about?? I tell her everything from week one until now, she says that this is the FIRST time shes ever heard about anything being wrong with it, that they just kept tellling her that I was complaining about the bill and that there was nothing wrong with my unit. She calls him on the speaker phone and he says again that nothing was wrong with it to her, that it didn't need to be replaced. she pulled the whole "well shes standing right here and says that you said it was going out" line and he starts talking all flustered saying that the units old but still working and etc etc. She asked him again, is the compressor going out? he says yes FINALLY and she told him he can come tomorrow to install it and after that his services were no longer needed at their location. She apologized, & gave me a $50 American Express giftcard and said she will have a reimbursement check waiting for me tomorrow in my apartment when I get out of class for Joleighs vet bill.

I wont count my chickens yet, as the guy that got fired (mind you, from THIS location only, where he only works once a week) will have a key to my apartment tomorrow, not alone though. Hopefully tomorrow around noon I will be bundled up with Joleigh freezing our butts off..

THANKS for the support from everyone. Me and Joleigh both needed a break, and may have just gotten it... being hot all day makes everything else seem worse, as i'm already agitated. one more night.. =)

omg thats wonderful news i will certainly be keeping my fingers crossed for you and joleigh! I really hope they do reimburse you for the vet bill too! It was nice of her to hand you a $50 gift card on the spot though for sure.

I dont know if i could make it through the night with my house being 90 lol i certainly wouldnt be able to sleep. My ice maker broke the other day and that is driving me crazy. The soonest they can come fix it is Sat I certainly hope he doesnt have to order parts. Im going through ice cube withdrawal. There is no room in my freezer for 'old fashioned' ice cube trays lol.

Anyway I really hope everything goes well for you and joleigh. When she is feeling better you will need to post some pics I love your avatar pic she totally looks like a sweetheart.

I wish I would have seen this sooner, but I'm glad all ended well. It did, didn't it?? Keep me updated.
Our compressor ate it today and it will be at least 2 days until its fixed. Like you, July and no air in Grenada, MS are NOT a good combination. I sent my kid off to her grandparent's house and until its fixed (which could be a week - our slumlord is horrible) I'm holing myself and the mutts up in the back bedroom which has a window unit!!
See you guys in a few days, LOL! Enjoy your cold air!!
