cool! Emma and Coco are going to be Aunties...and Aka an Uncle!  It seems like they were just born...so many of us watched them all grow up, from being tiny pups before their eyes even opened, to now Remi becoming a dad. If these pups end up anything like their parents (which they will ), they are going to be gorgeous. 
Congrats, and you know we will need constant updates...and TONS of pics once the babies are born. |

If that's truly the case.... you are correct, Mary Beth. Dogs with undescended testicles should never be allowed to breed. This is a well-documented genetic trait, passed on to future generations. In addition, because of the potential for an increased incidence of cancer within the retained testicle, it is strongly recommended that these dogs be neutered. The surgery to remove a retained testicle is more involved than a routine neuter. The veterinarian must literally hunt for the testicle, which may be located anywhere from the area around the kidney in the abdomen to the muscle near the groin.
I know what I'm talking about. Hoss had an undescended testicle and his neutering was pretty invasive. Although I never planned to breed Hoss anyway... my vet did give me a lecture about NOT breeding him.

| I sure hope he doesn't pass it on then. I'm sure the pups will be adorable (all pups are and your two are very cute)! Donna, just curious, why did you choose to breed Rem if he has this condition? I am not trying to start fights, I am really curious. You said you don't want to be called a BYB but that is one of the biggest complaints folks always have against breeders (which gets them that label) - breeding stock that is not carefully chosen for health and breed qualities. So maybe if you let us know your reasoning, those who might not agree could understand where you are coming from. Just a thought! |

Donna... I don't question anyone's "right" to neuter or spay their dogs. I don't even question anyone's "right" to breed their dogs. I'm not familiar with your dogs or whether they have health issus or not. I do not, however, promote "backyard breeding" and I highly suspect the majority of people here don't either. Many many many posts/discussions have been had on this forum in the past concerning this very subject.
But I do know for a fact, that it is not ethical to breed a male dog who has an undescended testicle.... or breed a Type A with a Type B. Now whether or not that is the case in your situation... I don't know. I hope it isn't. Do you have the "RIGHT" to do it? Of course. Is it an "ethical" thing to do? I don't believe it is.
As far as opinions expressed... this is an open, online community of 1800 people. I always figure when I post something it's going to be subject to opinions... negative OR positive.... and by me posting something I'm opening myself up to these opinions being expressed whether they agree with mine or not. It's just the "nature of the beast" so to speak.
I'm remembering very distinctly the discussions which took place... mostly negative discussions... when two blue rat terriers were bred. Did they have the right to do it? Yes. Was it an ethical breeding practice? No...
This is absolutely nothing personal against you... so please don't take it that way. |

I agree with Nora. It isnt' anything personal I would react the same way to any person who posted like this...and have as a matter of fact.
I work in rescue - I see so many sad stories about dogs who need homes. There is no good reason to breed unless a person is doing it for THE BETTERMENT OF THE BREED. And maybe you are - how with a Type A and Type B I dont' know or with a dog that might have a genetic problem but maybe you can explain HOW you're doing this for the betterment of the breed?
Anyway, I'm sure the pups will be cute. Puppies always are. I hope you find good forever homes for all of them. |

Well, I suppose it's too late to close the barn door, as the horse is already out.
I don't have anything new to add to the discussion on whether or not this constitutes backyard breeding and whether or not it should have been done in the first place. My own personal opinion, to which I am entitled, is that there are enough rat terriers in the world --- too many, perhaps, and from what I've seen, enough high quality breeders already established to insure the continuation of the breed.
I do want to address one aspect of this post in a general sense....it's fine and dandy to create a thread and request that if you don't have anything positive to say then please don't say anything at all; however, there is no guarantee or requirement that your fellow members abide by your wishes. They are free to speak their minds as well, as long as they do so in a way that does not use profanity or is overtly cruel (which no one has done).
Also, if you wish to create an ultimatum, (i.e.: I won't post anymore if you don't do as I say) that is certainly your perogative and you're free to follow through on it.

I'm assuming this was an accidental breeding? If it is, you should say so, rather than defending your position. There are many who read this forum who are inexperienced and less than knowledgeable about breeding. Those people might mistakenly get the idea that it is "okay" to breed a female puppy during her first heat, to a male less than 2 years old himself with questionable genetic defects. Those people might get the idea that your vet's patella check actually means something at that age, when of course it means nothing. Those people might get the idea that patellas are the only thing one should test prior to breeding. Those people may not understand that breeding an 8-month old female puts her health and development at serious risk. Etc., etc., etc...
If this was an accidental breeding, it is unfortunate, but an excellent opportunity for you to educate others on why it should have never happened....why you would have never done this on purpose. This is how a responsible and honest person would handle the situation.
If this WASN'T an accidental breeding, then the criticisms you're receiving are spot on.... |
