Today Kasey had a doctor's appointment for his arm. The xrays all look good, new bone growth is forming so he is making a good recovery so far. They had some issues with the gauze and cotton stuck in the pins when unwrapping his arm. It took them a long time to clean it up. All that time this was going on, poor Kasey is screaming his head off. It took so long to detach the mess from the pins that they were passing patients ahead of him for xray. They literally cut away piece by piece and used tweezers to get all cotton and gauze out of the pins. A very tedious process and very long when dealing with a 3 year old. Aside from that, he is having a few issues with his pins that are in his arm. Out of 3 pins, one has gone under the skin like before which had to be dug out and was not a pretty site nor any fun. A second is doing great!! But a third is/has come out some and was sticking out more than what they wanted to see. So during the visit, they attempted to push it back in by hand without any pain meds or anything and it was not fun at all. Needless to say, after Kasey screaming his head off and them not being able to budge the pin. They just opted to modify his cast so that it would allow for the extended pin. Phew... what a rough time we had.

Well, we know we have a few more rough visits ahead of us but this is one down and just a few more to go...

It is so hard for little people to have to have such painful proceedures done. Stand up for his rights for pain meds before they start to work on his poor little arm! So many times the adult doctors and nurses forget how much things can hurt on a liitle person and expect them to handle a proceedure that would have an adult kicking them in the head or more painful places.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's hard to explain to a 3 YO that the pain is temporary. I hope that things get back to normal soon.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Did they wet the gauze before trying to take if off? If not INSIST they do, if it does not come right off next time. If they give you any crap about it call a director. Sorry for Kasey and you for having to go through this. How bout 45 minutes give Kasey half his pain MED. That will help take the edge off and if they hurt him agagin you can give him the other half and it will work sooner. Hang in there girl. You will get through this and much more.

Actually, I really do not have any complaints about how they handle him. They are actaually very good with him. It is just not easy to go through this with a small child. So let me clarify a few things that you questioned. Yes, they did, regularly wet the area with Hydrogenproixide (sp?) as they worked on him. And from time to time they would give him a few minutes in hopes that it would work on desolving what they were working on. They they did and tried to make it as painless as possible as they could. But they could only do so much and they worked at it at a very slow pace not to cause too much pain all at once. That I understood and was happy for but man it just lasted for ever if you know what I mean. Now as far as pain meds, no they do not offer it within his visit but I have learned from the last time that he broke his arm that I needed to give him the pain midicine by mouth before each and every visit because of what we have experienced in the past. Now even though I had given that too him just before the visit, I was really surprised that they did not put some type of pain relief on the surface of where they were poking for so long. To me, had they done that, he would have felt less and would not have fussed so much. They used this the last time they removed the pins from his arm so I don't know why they could not use it to poke at him so much today. Especially when the time came to try and push that one pin back into his arm. That we did not know they would do until the doctor was fixing to rewrap his arm and said, oh hey... I am fixing to do something that will cause him some pain so just be aware of that fact.

So all in all, I think I did what I could to relieve some pain from my stand point without knowing extactly what they would do to him. But I do feel like they could have done a little something before poking at him so much and also before trying to push that pin back in. In all the time I have dealt with these doctors, this is the first time that I have seen them do something that really bothered me. And when I say that, I mean that when he took the side of his sizzors and placed it on that pin and grabbed ahold of Kasey's arm and pushed real hard in trying to push that pin back into his arm. Geezzz.... there has got to be a better way!!!

But it is all over now. I took him shopping and got him a nice surprise after that and we also went eat out for a nice lunch. Once we got home, he got to play outside with Molly and Busta. By then he had forgotten about everything poor baby.

But I will keep that in mind, and request that they put some type of pain relieve on the surface when they are going to poke at him so much or try to adjust the pins.

Also I am not sure if I mentioned this before, but after the failure of getting the extruded pin to go back in, they finally decided to just modify the cast to go around that pin so it would not be a problem for him.

Thanks so much for the advice!!!

Donna I can only imagine the pain YOU have to go through with all this. I know you are doing everything in your power to ease the pian for Kasey. Believe it or not there are still people in the medical profession who would not know to wet the dressing/gauze before trying to take it off. And I guess the Dr. thought it would be easiset to just try to push the pin back in rather than wait for pain meds. I'm glad they adjusted to new cast for the pin. And I'm glad the arm is healing. It seams like I'm on a mama bear roll today with the medical profession. Sorry. You, Kasey, Molly and even buster are never far from my thoughts.

Poor Kasey. Glad you treated him to a surprise and lunch I'm sure that helped deal with the pain by taking his mind off of it for awhile.

Well you know what... my husband and I are like... this is so crazy, he needs some kind of brace or something to keep this from happening again. People are going to think we abuse our little boy which is so far from the truth!!! LOL Oddly enough, we had mentioned it to his doctor the first time he broke that arm and she saw no reason for it. So we did not do it. Well now... we are insisting that he has "something" for a while. He is all boy, very active and does not slow down for anything. We know our child, and we fully believe that he needs some kind of protection for that arm for a while because as active as he is, it is very possible for him to brake it yet a third time. I do not want to see that, so we want a brace!!! period!!! And if she does not give us one, well we will find one else where.

So not a bubble... but I will be happy with a brace!!! LOL

Poor Kasey! What a lot to go through, for both him and you, Donna!
Hoping everything else goes smoothly for him. And best of luck with the brace. Sounds like it would really be a good idea!

Thank you... I feel like though we are in a rut. We are constantly hoping and praying that Kasey gets better. I know that things have been rough here and the last time that Kasey broke or should I say shattered his elbow was only 5 months ago. And here we are again. I know that I have had other issues with other/older kids but man... you people must think I am a basket case/nuts whatevery you want to call it!!!

But Believe me, no one wants to see these issues resolved more than me!!!! There are lots more that has come up that has not been posted. I am just staying on the sidelines so to speak.

One day, I will be back and you guys will say... oh yeah, I remember you!!!! The one that would not go away!!! LOL

Poor little mite. The good news is that kids and pups often put these youthful injuries behind them and forget. My baby sister had stitches 4 times before she was 3. They finally figured out the kid needed glasses. She doesn't remember any of it.

Oh Donna! So sorry Kasey is having such a rough time.....it is just as tough on the Mom taking care of him! You hang in there! Sure hope the next few visits go more smoothly and he heals up nicely. And yep, I'd be gettin' a brace for that arm too!
