I had a little girl come up to me at school today and was talking about her sick puppy like mine. Her grandmother said it had parvo and they gave it a pill. Has anybody ever heard of this when my brothers dog had parvo they put it on IV's for a week and wasn't sure if she would make it.I was just asking because the little girl looked so sad about it. |

If the puppy had Parvo and had been to the vet, it would most likely have been admitted for the IV fluids. I wonder if the pup was suspected to have Parvo and the Grandmother was trying to tend to it at home. I know that when Amos got sick with Parvo, the first night I thought it was just "sick stomach" as he had been to the vet on Wed and by Fri night he was REALLY sick. That night, I treated him at home. By the next morning he was so sick that I KNEW he was gonna die if I didn't get him to a vet. Or maybe the pup had already been to the vet and treated and was home for recovery. They can still be really sick, but able to be at home and maybe taking meds to get better. |

what sort of things can you do to prevent your dog from getting parvo before they get their vaccination? i am just terrified for that! I think you have to be very cautious taking them outside in areas where many dogs have been...parvo can live in the ground for YEARS (like 8-9 i think) so, for young puppies, i have heard stay away from dog parks and such until they are older and vaccinated. Trixi had it when we got her fromt he animal shelter....a 35 dollar dog turned into a $600 dog overnight...worth every penny...but the poor girl...thank goodness we got her or they would have euthanized her! |

Poor kid, I hope her puppy gets better! Let us know if you talk to her again. So I guess a Parvo vaccination is a must in your opinion? I've just been reading lately about how to many vaccinations may actually be harming our dogs...apparently, once a Parvo shot confers lifelong immunity once it works, but many vets recommend a parvo shot once very year? Sorry, not really up to date on doggy diseases for the most part, but I'm learning!! |

I would use these guidelines for vaccinating dogs.

Parvo strips the lining of the intestines and prevents absorbtion so pills would be a bad way to treat parvo - not to mention the dog would be nauseous too. Parvo is treated with IV meds only.. hydration hyddration hydration and support meds.
I wonder maybe if the grandmother was trying to ease the little girls worries by saying they could just give it a pill?
Vaccinating pups and boosters are so incredibly important.. I think Distemper is one of the worst things to watch a dog go through - Parvo is up there as well.
Hope the pup survives... |

Alice was $20 bucks but after getting her fixed and healthy it was well over $700.00. She needs a job to start paying back. Neither of my dogs ever had Parvo so not much help here. |
