Hi guys

Does any one here have a "working"  Ratty?

Or perhaps have partipated in hunting events?

If so, what age did the rattie start killing varmints safely?

I live in Aparment complex that is undergoing major renovations and the Rats are out!

best

mel

Both of my ratties are pretty good "hunters." I'm not quite sure when they started catching and killing rodents...maybe around 7-8 months. I think it really depends on how strong a prey drive your rattie has. Molly is so much more driven to hunt than Lucy is, for instance. Molly has to go outside to "secure the perimiter" every night before bed...Lucy would rather stay inside and go to bed early.

Nora might have potential--she is very young and not to be let of the leash, but when I go out side to have her do her pottie--if she sees a squirril or bird, her whole stance changes-she totally concentrates on them gets in position and looks like she wants to KILL--I quess time will tell. Once she has all her shots around six month old, I will be able to cautionly put her in a postition were I can see how ambitious she really is.

This might sound over the top--but I want to bring Rattie awaress the NYC. Not to many people know what she is--they just love her. We have so much vermin in this city. If there were big numbers of Ratties, it might be GREAT. Totally obsesssed with my girl, Nora

Wow!  That's so interesting about your rattie, MOlly having to go out  and secure your premises.  My Mollee just started doing that!  She asks to go out but doesn't have to relieve herself.  Her ears are perked up and her tail is up and she's sniffing and looking around.  It drives me nuts, but now that I understand what she's trying to do, I won't care and I'll let her, so thanks.

I have a question for the group. Mollee has just discovered hunting. She sits by the doors and watches the chipmunks and squirrels and is dying to go out and get them. I don't mind her chasing the squirrels, but I don't want her to kill the chipmunk that lives outside my house. I'm also concerned because she is becoming obsessed with this activity. Help!

Rat Terrier - it's all in the name! This is the breeds natural instinct - why try to break it?

That is a Rat thing and your cant change it, just what they where bred to do, its a part of them. But my question is dose any one know how to get them into the Rat Trials you know where they place them in a premade maze to find the rats, or scents of rats, I think Guen would excell at this she hunts mice and will go after anything in the barns if I give her the chance???

www.workdogs.com is a great looking site and club that adresses the sport of ratting and has many fun looking activites. I wish I could participate, but Nora is a few shots to shy to play this year.

Let me know if you have any problems finding it--oh, they have AKC activities that rats qualify for as Service Stock

We recently got a "Decker" Rat Terrier puppy bitch.  Decker's were specifically bred for hunting and are bigger (25-35 lbs. mature) than standard Rat Terriers. We do hope to utilize our Rattie on our farm for hunting vermin/varmints and for hunting rabbits and squirrels.
The Decker's are even used to hunt wild boar so they must be pretty aggressive hunters.

Side note:
I'm wondering if you can train a Rattie to not do random digging but be allowed to dig for moles/chipmunks etc  in areas you want them to.
I noticed our puppy likes to dig a lot but I'm not real hot on allowing her to tear up my backyard.

cottage_rose, my girls are both Deckers they are 27 and 31 lbs.

you can train dogs not to dig in certain areas, you just have to "catch them in the act" and correct them then...not when you discover the hole. mine know not to dig in the garden area, but they have plenty of other places where they are allowed to dig.
