Do you guys find this strange? My goddaughter's pre-K class is taking a field trip to Petco. These are 4 to 5 year olds. I guess at that age, it is supposed to be pretty much just a fun thing to do, but why not take them to a state park or something? Too dangerous? All these kids are going to go home a put all kinds of pressure on their parents to get a gerbil, guinea pig, parakeet, etc. At least they don't sell dogs and cats there. I don't know--I guess they seem a little young to be going to a retail store without their parents, and I don't see the point in it. |

Maybe they talk about proper pet care??? In a way the wee ones would understand??? But yep, don't envy the parents after that field trip |

Oh, I don't envy those parents either! Maybe they do talk about proper pet care. I was at the Dollar Store not too long ago, and there was a class in there about that same age. There were probably 20 in all, and they were all in line to each get their Dollar Store item (yep, had to stand at the end of that line; there was only one cashier working). Seems awfully young to me--do kids that age really have any concept of money or responsibility? Seems like it should be a parental responsibility to teach this stuff, anyway, not the school's. I guess I'm old fashioned, though.

| My mom's actually a pre-k teacher.. and in a small town there's only so much that they can do. A few times a year they come to where I go to school at and go to zoo's, museums, etc. but its simply not in her budget to come here for every field trip. A few of their field trips are going to pizza hut, walmart, etc. Yesterday they went to a church. My moms smart though, she doesn't like having to try to get parents to come, cause they never do... so she gets a lot of what she calls "bring it to us" field trips.. I.E. for $150 the "goat lady" is coming to their school today... i think its a matter of what you are available to do.. and its easier to bring kids to a closed in store than a open park... just my opinion tho! |

It does seem a bit strange.. I don't remember my kids ever going on a field trip to any type of retail stores. I do remember they both went on a field trip in pre-school (when they were 4 years old) to a Vet office and saw animals there... but don't remember any of the kids wanting them. Maybe different when they aren't "selling" them there though! |

I don't know, but as a former pre k teacher, I can see doing this...BUT ONLY if it was on a day when the humane society or local rescue was going to be there....so that the kids get to interact with the animals, but are not pressured to "BUY" something. I mean, I know that they would probably go home and ask Mom or Dad for a dog/cat, BUT....no more than they would if we went to a petting zoo and they wanted a pony. It is so hard to plan field trips that are safe and affordable, you have to take what you can get sometimes...and MAYBE...just MAYBE....it will stick with even ONE of those kids how many animals are taken for granted and need a good loving home. THAT kid might just grow up to be a Veternarian or a foster or something else that would help those animals. NEVER write off what a preK child can think about in the future. My oldest is 10..almost... and since he was THREE he has wanted to be a forsenic scientist for the FBI...and I KNOW he's gonna do it!!! Some children are born knowing what they are supposed to do....maybe this helps one of those children realize it. JMHO!! |

Oh gosh, I see small kids going on field trips to all kinds of places I never went to or was given the opportunity to go to when I was little....now that was a few years ago, mind you....but still....kids today go and do all kinds of stuff way earlier than we ever did. When my daughter was that age they went to the local dairy farm and several other places.....it's all good....gives kids experience seeing different things.... And believe me, when we got home from the dairy farm my dear Shelbi thought we'd buy a cow....cause that would be way cheaper than buying milk all the time! :-) Hopefully they have a great time and learn something along the way! | My kids went to the library and the bank. They visited the nursing homes at Christmas and a tree farm where they have elk and lamas. The biggest trip that they all loved was being able to go to the movies during school.........For our schoool alot of it is good conduct incentive programs that allow the students to go on the trips for various reasons.....which works very well. My youngest, 3rd grade, just this week spent the entire day at a pioneer school where he learned how they studied, what games they played and what food they ate.......they even had to dress the part......it was great. |

| Interesting...I appreciate the points of view, especially from the pre-K teachers. We live in a major metropolitan area, so there's plenty to see and do here. My background is in conservation ecology, and in graduate school there were a few science education teachers in some of my classes. We talked extensively about how consumer-driven our society is and about how children are taught less and less about the outdoors, so that's where I think my point of view stems from. I guess I just find it disheartening that kids are going to retail stores for field trips instead of museums, zoos, farms, parks, (or the bank or a nursing home like Tina mentioned) or something else along those lines. I guess it's easy for teachers, relatively safe, and fun for the kids, though. |
