Do you have a dog that has seizures? My baby has them. I have to give her phenobarbital twice a day for this. The vet told me she is
epileptic and that this is VERY common in ratties. Just wanted to hear if other people have this issue to. She just tured 6 in March, and has been having them since she was 4. I really would like to know if anyone has this to. And if there is anything that can come from this with her.

Welcome! I'm sorry to hear that Harly has seizures. How bad are they? How often does she get them? I had a yellow lab (Jake), and a dobie mix (Buddy) that both had epilepsy. Jake started having grand maul (sp?) seizures when he was about 4 too...he had to go on phenobarb, and eventually, they did go away, or at least he had them very rarely. Buddy, on the other hand, started having seizures when he was older, around 8 1/2 yrs old, and they got a little worse as he got older. His weren't too bad...just his head would start shaking, but they lasted anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. For some reason, he couldn't handle the phenobarb, and was put on a liquid med called potassium bromide that had to be mixed into his food twice a day. |

| I have no personal experience, but we do have a few members with non-ratties with seizures. We do have 1 member who has 2 ratties who both have seizures but she isn't around as much anymore. As far as I have seen it doesn't seem to be too common. Does the phenobarb control them? |

| I don't believe your vet is correct in saying that this is common in ratties.... |

It's not any more common for a Rat Terrier to get epilepsy than any other breed. I don’t know where your vet got that info… my Sasha had seizures, but they were later in life (17ish) and they were age related and related to liver dysfunction they believe, not epilepsy, as epilepsy occurs in younger dogs. |

Hi, welcome to the group, and so sorry to hear that your rattie has epileptic seizures, but be thankful for the phenobarb that controls them. I have a little Pom (Heidi) who is over 8 yrs old now and has had seizures ever since she was about 2 years old. She used to have horrible violent seizures, even while she was on her medication, if she got a cold or a virus and her immunities would get weak. She hasnt had even a small one in over a year now, though (thank God) and she is still on the phenobarbitol. That is a relative inexpensive medicine that keeps her seizures under control. The medicine has a bad side effect in that over several years of taking it, it makes her gums really soft and she has lost several teeth, but she still manages to eat enough to keep her weight up. I have to agree, that I dont think seizures are any more common for rat terriers than with any breed, no matter how large or how small----it just happens to some dogs. |
