She examined the ear and feels that it is most likely a benign histiocytoma and is hopeful that the steroid cream she gave me will shrink its size.  The size it is now over the very thin skin of the ear, she's afraid if they surgically remove it, there won't be enough skin for it to heal properly and he may end up with a hole in his ear.

Next issue was the "humping seizure" like activity.  Without actually seeing the activity she feels that he was just overexcited about something.  Who knows what, with a dog, it could have been anything and that "humping" has rarely been associated with any type of seizure activity in dogs.

My next concern was Amos back legs.  He runs funny.  Always has.  He has kinda of a side ways positioning of his back legs and he never runs with his back legs and front legs in unison.  His back legs just kinda bounce along with his front legs doing all the work.  He also will yelp in pain sometimes if you bump his back legs.  Sometimes when he jumps up on something, if he doesn't hit it just right, his back legs kinda collapse and he yelps and turns and nips at his legs.  This doesn't happen often, but it looks painful when he does it.  It also doesn't last long.  When I go out and run Amos every day.  He usually will run to get the ball about 3 times.  After that he kinda walks to get it and I usually quit throwing.  I kinda thought he was just lazy but now I'm beginning to wonder.

The vet a thorough exam and when she felt along his spine, she felt a definate hump in his lower spine.  When she manipulated his back legs, gently, he yelped and nipped at her.

She says the only way to know for sure if he has some type of congenital spinal deformity will be to xray it.  He has to be anesthetized for this and because it wasn't an emergency and he is not acute, we have scheduled the xrays for next Friday morning.  If the histiocytoma has shrunk enough they will also take that off while he is asleep for his xrays.

So that's the gist of it.  He may or may not have some type of congenital defect in his spine that may be hindering him some.  I'll just wait until the xrays are done to worry about what we may need to do about it.

Oh yeah, today Amos weighed 50.5lbs!  He keeps growing and growing.  A lady came in to get some meds refilled for her dog and she looked at him and said "Oh my goodness!  He looks just like MY dog, except BIGGER!"  She commented they had the same spots and ticking and everything.  I asked her what her dog was and she said  she had a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix.

Hi Kim, thanks for Amos's update. Poor baby! I wonder if maybe he had some sort of injury before you got him, or maybe something happened during the birth? I hope everything goes okay... I also wonder if possibly his rapid growth rate could cause him back or leg pain? (It did with me when I ws growing rapidly..lol) Hmmm or even some sort of after affect from the parvo?

Anyway, just wanted to thank you for the update. I'm a big Amos fan!

So if he has a spine issue can they fix it? Or will he just have to live with it or what? Sorry about his little ear, too.

I'm surprised Amos is still growing. Isn't he a year old already? Is he getting taller/longer as well as heavier? Bob had that type of bump on his ear about a year ago. It went away after a month or so, but I can still see the place where it was if I look closely. I hope that nothing serious is wrong with our Amos Moses.

Thanks ya'll. I'll keep ya'll updated. He's fine. Really, he is. I'm off work today and I've pretty much spent it with the dog. lol After the vet visit, hubby and I got burgers and stopped by the lake and ate them. I walked Amos and he always loves going to the lake. We also sat and watched a pay per view movie and I sat on the floor so Amos could lay his head in my lap. That is a rare treat 'cuz I rarely sit still long enough to watch a movie. Lol I sat there and filed my nails, then I filed Amos'! Can you believe he just layed there and let my file his nails. It was so sweet. If he was a girl doggie I believe he would have let me paint his nails.
As for growing, yep, I guess he's still growing. The vet didn't say anything about him being overweight, but I really do need to cut back on the snacks.

I love all ya'll. Nobody else understands how we feel about our dogs
like ya'll do.  I'm glad that I've got RT.com. Don't know what I'd do without ya'll.

Thanks for the update Kim. I'm and sure sorry to hear about the problem with his spine.  I don't suppose the vet has any idea (before taking the x-rays) if it is a problem he might have to live with, or whether it might  be something they can fix?

It sounds like Amos is having a fun rest of the day,  hangin' with his favorite people!

Poor Amos. If it makes you feel any better, Sampson, my poodle, has a condition where his spine is longer than his body. He kind of always walks "hump backed". We have had a few problems with it over the years, but the Dr. gave me metacam and after a dose or two, he always seems to be fine. We didn't have to start the metacam until a couple of years ago......but I guess the fact that he is twelve years old, probably plays into the fact that he is "feeling" it a little more than when he was a puppy. If Amos does have a spine problem, I would ask the Vet about Metacam, I swear it works miracles!!!

Poor Amos baby. I sure hope it turns out to be nothing -- just some little muscular thing or something. Please keep us posted and try not to worry.
