I was just wondering.  This weekend at my daughters, all of a sudden Nena/Madeline would start staring at the chari/sofa/carpet where ever she happened to be sitting and then you could see she was "following" something.  I looked, nothing there.  My first thought was floaters, because I had them and discovered I had a torn retina in my left eye and had to have surgery.  I also noticed that if Anna The Kitty is standing more than 20-25 feet away, Nena won't growl at her.  Do dogs get cataracts?  Can you get a dogs eyes examined?  How do you do that?

You can have your vet take a good look at her eyes next times she's in to see him/her or make an appointment and have him take a look now. I'm sure (though I've never had an animal with eye issues) that there are tests, exams, etc., that vets do for things like cataracts, which dogs do get and can have surgery for.

dogs can get anything we can...a visit to the vet would be a good idea.

Sandy does the same thing when she hears a fly or some bug flying in the room. She gets totally obessive with it!! She will follow it and chase after it and most times, I don't see or hear a dang thing!!

Yes, dogs can get cataracts but Madeleine isn't very old, is she? Of course cataracts can also come from being out in the sun too much.

Mayfly will watch and chase mosquitos sometimes when we don't see the bug.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe "floaters" are different from cataracts. I know dogs get cataracts.. but how would one know if they get floaters?

Yes, floaters are totally different. I have a couple of floaters (I see the eye dr. every few months since I have glaucoma) but I've had them for years. Dr. said if I suddenly got several new ones it could indicate a more serious condition. I think I got them because I have extreme nearsightedness...well, used to, before cataract surgery.

My floaters don't make me want to "watch" them though...

When I first got floaters, I thought I was seeing a bug climbing up the wall or where ever I happen to be looking. It is very frustrating. I went to the eye doctor and they found a torn retina. After laser surgery, I still have floaters, but he said I would have to get used to them as they may not go away and if I saw more than the usual amount, to go see him immediately. Fast forward a few years....I went to the doctor last month for eye exam and new prescription for glasses. I have the beginnings of cataracts!!!!!!! WAAAAHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAA!!! I'm only 54!!!!! #*$&%*)(#$)@)@

Don't worry about the cataracts, people are getting them younger now, especially if they haven't protected their eyes from a lot of sun. My BIL got them at 42, I got them at 47. The surgery is easy and they will put a new lens in your eye so you can see better even than before you got the cataracts! I had such bad nearsightedness that I was legally blind without glasses before the surgery...now I can drive, everything without glasses! I still need them for reading though.
