What genetic diseases, if any, have you seen in Rat Terriers?
Thanks,

| Color Dilution Alopecia, or CDA, that happens in some fawn and blue rat terriers...dogs that have it have a poor, patchy coat progressing to widespread permanent hair loss, usually more so on their blue/fawn patches. Dogs that have lighter coats usually show signs at around 6 months, while ones with darker coats usually show signs of CDA at around 2 to 3 years of age. It doesn't occur in all blue/fawn ratties, but those affected should not be bred, and you should NEVER breed a fawn to a fawn, a blue to a blue, or fawn to a blue because it increases the chance of CDA being passed down to the offspring. Dogs that have parents that are not blue/fawn have a less likely chance of getting it than a dog with a blue/fawn parent. |

| Jack has SLO (symmetrical Lupoid Onchodystrophy) which is an autoimmune nail disease where the body rejects the nails and they get brittle and split and fall off. He may also have Discoid Lupus (dermatological form of Lupus that affects the skin). I think allergies pop up alot with these little guys. We also have a member who has a dog afflicted with vasculitis. The problems are rare still with this breed but they are still there. |

Thanks for your replies. I was wondering what problems may be out there. Glad to hear they are rare overall. How common is it for people to breed for color in RT's? Not very many people breed solely for color with feist... Is there a huge problem with breeders breeding too close for too many generations? |

Anyone else hear of other genetic disorders in RT's? Don't be afraid, no one is here to judge. You don't have to point the finger at your own dogs if you don't want to. I am just trying to find out what sort of problems exist. Some things need to be brought to attention as it may help others. |
