Oh My Tina! I am in the same boat. I need Chem to get in to school this Fall but to get into Chem I need to pass a basic Math placement test and it is 95 percent algebra! I have been procrastinating so much that it is killing me. I haven't done algebra in 12 years and I am lost. There is a site called www.purplemath.com that is pretty simple and explains it really well. I am not a math person either, and WHEN do you ever use algebra.......obviously not so much or I wouldn't be so lost now, right?! |

i believe one of the sites you can go to is called gomath.com that is what one of my professors suggested.... if i remember it correctly.
I'm taking finite math.... but if you need help, with one of the math/ algebra, throw one at me and I'll be glad to try to figure it out and let you know my answers.... plus each step by step....
the biggest trickest part of the algebra, is you gotta watch your negatives and positives!! and always double check that to.... and another thing i learned is that if you skip one little step, can mess you up... so it's worth the time to write down each single step to make sure you get the right answer. |

Tina prior to going to college I had to take so entrance exam, I paniced. Like you I DON"T DO MATH!!! I went a bought a study book for ACT exam. I stuied real hard, mostly the math/Algebra. I didn't think I understood the algebra very well but when I went and took my test, they asked me to come and take an adavanced algebra exam that I would get class credit for. Of the 23 people taking the test my math score was the highest. There was one other "cover wagon people" in the, what turned out to be SAT, test and all others were just out of high school. My sugestion find an easy ACT study or math course study book. It really helped me. |

| I was never a math wiz. I discovered, however, that if I didn't panic, I could get the hang of the equations and work it through. The two biggest enemies of learning algebra are fear and disorganization. If you can organize any problem on a page, you can work your way through it. My younger son was definitely in the math anti-talent category; then he started using big box graph paper instead of blank paper so that his columns and rows didn't wander all over the page, and he started making progress. |

My 17 yearold son said he would give it a whirl........but he added "If you do goos you can get a gold star and a cookie" that is what I used to tell him in 1st grade about spelling.........careful what you say to your kids......it might come back to haunt you...........hehehehe Thanks all!!!!!!! |

| There is also a book on the market called "Algebra for Dummies" it explains things very well. Just do lots of problems, do extra, more than the teacher asigns if at all possible. I think of math like musical notes. It may not help you but it got me over my math anxiety. All those little letters are a separate musical note. X is a different note than Y, and x and x squared are different places on the scale One higher one lower. It took some of the fear out and I was able to get up to calculus. |
