Hey everyone,

so i am not yet a rattie mommy, but i have been researching and learning a lot obout the breed because i am hopefully getting one in a couple months. well i live in the northwest, and i havnt seen many rat terriers around here but the other day i was at this ladys house and immediatly when i saw her dog i said to myself that HAS to be a rat terrier, so i asked her and i was right! well her and i were talking for like 2ominutes about her dog and the breed! its was so great, anyway...

my mother was there with me and she knows i am planning on a puppy really soon so she was listening to what the owner was saying about the pros and cons of the breed. there were l ot of pros but she did say, like most small breeds, he dog sometimes isnt comfortable around people she doesnt know and may nip at them also because she is protective of her owner. well my mom has always been concerned when it comes to that because she has seen how my grandparents little dog acts, and she has actually bitten my dad and uncle. she knows italso has to do with the way my grandparents trained their dog. and i explains how with my dog, i would properly socialize the dog and get her used to a lot of situations and people. but of course she is still worried about that.

will someone please explain to me what i need to do to propery train my dog to not do this? (BITE AT STRANGERS BE NERVOUSE/AGGRESSIVE/PROTECTIVE AROUND THEM)

sorry so long, but any advice would be helpfull and reassuring.

thanks,

~Erin

Well early socialization is the first step thats for sure. Other than that I can't say my Noodles loves everyone and everything, guess I'm way way on the other side of agression.

There is no joy greater than being owned by a Rattie!!

Watch alot of the dog whisperer. I have learned alot about how to recognize early aggression, etc and correct it before it escalates. Every dog is a little different, so you will tailor the things you learn to suit your puppy. Provide early socialization and be careful not to inavertantly rewarding unwanted behavior. 99% of bad dog behavior is created by humans, well intentioned or not. Have fun picking out a new puppy!
