A 26 pound bag of dry and 12 cans of 95% Salmon was about $98.00! But this dog food is supposed to be grain free - high protein and low carbs. My Snoopy has crystals in his urine and my holistic vet said this is often caused by high carb kibble, so she suggested more protein. I wanted to change his diet because if I don't address it, the next step is kidney stones and I sure don't want him to have to deal with that!!
So I figured I may as well feed ALL the babies this stuff instead of just Snoopy... I hope it works. It's actually only about $20.00 more for both than Eagle Pack Holistic that I was buying, so it's worth it!
Has anybody else tried this food yet? |

My babies come first always! I will go without so that they can get the best. If this helps my Snoopers, it will be worth it! |

Do you add water to the kibble? That can help the kidneys flush waste from the system. My only concern is the apparently higher mineral content in the Core. Were you feeding the EP Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon? Have you tried the EP Small and Mini Breed food? It's not grain free but it does have fewer carbs and higher protein. I've got nothing against the Core, my dogs liked it when I fed it, although I didn't feed the Ocean formula. If I remember right, Core had larger kibbles, where the new EP Small Breed food had tiny kibbles, which were easier for Oscar to eat. |

Hi Ski,
No I haven't. I guess I was concentrating more on the high protein content. I checked with my holistic vet and she said the Core was better than what I was feeding regarding the crystals in Snoopers' urine, but she said I should really try to feed my babies raw. I'm not sure if I can do that - it's just MY hang up, I'm sure cuz I've heard good things about it... |

If you want to feed raw without the gross mess, you might give The Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw a try. I'm feeding Eagle Pack in the morning and the dehydrated raw in the evening. The price looks outrageous at first, but I feed less than the recommended amount and only once a day so it lasts awhile. It's also all certified human grade food without preservatives. My guys loved Embark, and Force, but Oscar wouldn't eat the Thrive formula. It's actually formulated for people that want to add their own meat to increase the protein, but it is nutritionally complete by itself. You can check out their site at http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/index.shtml
I order it from http://www.northcoastmarines.com/dog_foods.htm They're located in northern Ohio so it keeps the shipping costs down.

Thanks for the info! I was feeding EP Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon. Snoopy has had crystals in his urine before. In addition to diet, it also could be something genetic with him, unfortunately. |

Hi Sue!, I used Wellness Core reduced fat, but didn't like the fact a couple of the dogs drank much more water then normal, also I didn't like all the build-up on their teeth, however, they loved the food! I have mine on Honest Kitchen Force and I really like how they look, and they love it!
I think some dogs do well with Core and some don't It sure won't hurt to give it a try, and may help! good luck! Amy

Hey Sue! I saw your post on the health forum and replied to you there... Sorry, I'm too lazy to retype. Rowdy gets a fish formula, but he's on Orijen 6 Fresh Fish. You can see the rest of my comments over there. |
