Was going to PM Nora with a question, but thought others might face similar situation and could benefit from the discussion.
So.... Daisy goes with us every weekend during the summer to the lake. Nice campground, great people, good bit of dogs - usually no problems. Well, I mentioned some last year that one of our friends' has an unaltered male lab that Daisy would get snarly/grumpy with when he, er...."investigated" her a little to close for her peace of mind (if you know what I mean). For those that don't know, Daisy is spayed and was before ever coming into heat, so she's obviously not giving off any scents or signals to males. When Mary and I went up this past Saturday to clean up and open the campers, we went to visit our other friends who were there with their male chihuahua, Jose. Last year he was just a baby. Now, he is another unaltered male dog who Daisy is not thrilled about being quite so "happy" to see her.
They were both on leash and played for quite a while until Jose started to get excited and sniff a little too long, too often. And Daisy gets snarly. No biting at all, obviously sending a message that Jose just wouldn't heed.
So I just want to double check my theory that there isn't a whole lot I can/should do about her being grumpy with these "boys". She is usually fine with other dogs and was even fine last year with "happy pants Gus" (the Lab) when off leash because she can easily outrun him (or she'd hide under something where he couldn't fit and laugh at him.
Anyway, just curious. And, no, I don't know why they aren't fixed. I believe it falls in the category of "they're boys, they can't get pregnant, so why worry about it".

| Miss Daisy just has her personal space boundaries and doesn't like pushy boys who try to go beyond them. I would say to let her handle them and put them in their places, without letting it get out of control or anyone getting hurt. |

Setting boundaries? I can't go by the dogs I have now...Rosie is not spayed, and while the ratties are, they have not been around many male dogs (that weren't nuetered, anyways). When I was a kid, we had 2 spayed females (springer spaniel and lab mix), my parents took in my brother's yellow lab who was not nuetered...one of the first days there, Jake cornered the springer spaniel in the hallway, and she growled at him (the first and only time I EVER heard her growl in her entire life), after that, he left her alone. |

I don't have much experience either with unaltered males. I guess I kind of thought maybe males didn't get excited unless a female who was in heat was nearby? But maybe it has to do with their being young and not fully "in control" of the hormones. Hopefully Gus will have outgrown some of his tendencies over the past year I don't think it's a dominance thing in this case...neither of these guys have a dominant nature. I do think the sniffing/excitement is about trying to mate, even though Daisy is no "mateable" (I know that's not a word.) |

Honestly Tracey, I think a lot of unneutered males are because of the egos of their male owners!! My Dad is a perfect example. He adopted an older (2-3 years) male pom - but refused to have it neutered. The dog was a little snot and snippy and downright mean - and would benefit from being neutered to get rid of some of that nasty testosterone in his body. My father flat out refused. Never really gave a good reason, just said he didn't think it was necessary, even after everybody explained to him the benefits of having the dog neutered.
I don't live near my father, but someone FINALLY got through to him and after about 4 years of ownership, my father had the dog snipped. Apparently he's much friendlier and less aggressive. DUH!! I honestly think he didn't want the dog's testicles snipped off cuz of HIS male ego!!

Well, I think the Lab's owner intended/intends to breed him at some point. Jose, I have no clue. So I guess I'll just have to try and limit their interaction. Though we haven't seen Gus yet this year - maybe he'll be better. And they also have a new baby (the malti-poo I posted a while ago) who is a male, but is very young. SIGH. |

| Toby is unaltered right now. We are saving up money to get it done. But he is interested in smelling and being nosey with Males and Females. He drives my mom's cat crazy smelling her. She just ends up waiting till he is not paying attention and attacks him. But Toby is very smelly smellly oriented with other dogs, male or female, altered or unaltered. We always ask a female dog owner before they interact if they are altered or unaltered so we don't have any bad connections. Hopefully things will go better for you this summer. |

| Yeah, they want through the typical dog initiation of smell introduction just fine and started to and did play for a good while, but then Jose took it to another level - LOL - and Daisy was having none of it!!! |

Probably best to let Daisy put them in their place, so long as a fight doesn't brake out, which probably won't.
Lol, Sue, I have to agree! My dad didn't want to get Sam neutered at first because he "felt bad for him". The mom said, "too bad" and thankfully he was snipped. |

I agree with Pam. I would just make sure it didn;t get out of hand, but if the owners are going to get them fixed then they should be able to deal with Daisy getting a little snippy. I get snippy too, . |

| Well, Skipper is neutered but spent the first 2-3 years of his life with testicles intact...so most nights as we get ready for bed he romances Mayfly...which is fine until he tries to hump her. At that she can get quite adamant about him NOT doing that. Needless to say he gets quite frustrated...LOL |

I could spend the rest of 2008 trying to figure out why people don't spay/neuter their pets, and STILL not come up with a justifiable reason. There truly is no excuse for it. Unneutered males are.. generally speaking... more aggressive than neutered males, and unspayed females have big time hormonal issues. We all could write dissertations on the benefits of spaying/neutering our pets... I agree wholeheartedly with the others. Daisy is certainly within her rights to protect her own "space", and from what I'm gathering... any interaction with the other dogs is supervised. So if things get out of hand, you are there to nip it in the bud. Your responsibility... as you well know... is to protect YOUR dog at whatever cost, and I'm sure you are very capable of doing just that. But it sounds as though Miss Daisy is doing well at taking care of herself! LOL I have to tell ya though... Bailey Boy is NOT happy about other dogs... especially unneutered males... invading his territory! |

LOL, Nora. I figured as much, of course. The worse part is that at times, I get an attitude or "the look" like MY DOG is the one who has a problem - PFFFT. Whatever! Maybe Bailey should make the trip up to Lake Erie and have a little heart-to-heart with these fellows ?? |
