My dog did too. She was itchy and rashy. Red rash on her belly. I discovered through reading on this site that she prob. had an allergy. I switched her food to Natural Balance and her skin issues went completely away. I was feeding Purina Dog chow before that. So mine was a food allergy, most likely to grains. What food are you feeding?

There could be many reasons for her rash, but since ratties are prone to grain allergies, I'd think it would be connected to that. Consider switching your pup to a grain free kibble...there are several out there that are pretty good. I give my ratties Innova EVO.

For sure look for a grain free food. Lots of folks like the EVO. Natural Balance has a grain free. Solid Gold has a grain free. There are several on the market now. They cost a little more but these small dogs don't eat that much (trust me, I used to feed an 80lb greyhound!!)

There was an article in our local newspaper yesterday that mentioned a homemade remedy for dogs (and horses) hot spots.  They say mix equal parts water, baby oil and Listerine in a spray bottle, spray it on and and massage it into the skin for immediate relief.  They said a possible explanation was that Listerine contains herbal oils that may have anti-fungal activity.
