Does anyone here have a car seat for your dog? I was wondering how well they work. My dogs love going for car rides, but they drive me nuts because I want them to stay in the back seat and they keep trying to come up front. Plus I've put on my brakes hard before and Lacey fell off the seat and I had to stop because I was worried she got hurt. So now Im wanting info on the car restraints that are available. Can the dog lay down and go to sleep if they want. The pics Ive seen of them shows the dogs sitting up. Also I worry the they will fight the restraint since they arent used to it....was that a problem for anyone? Thanks in advance for your info. |

The one I use for Apollo I got at PetSmart. It was around $20.00. I think the name of it it 'Travelin' Dog'. He can stand up to look out the window, sit down, turn around, and lay down with his seatbelt on. It has a padded chest area for extra comfort. One important thing though... everytime I put him in it I double check to make sure that it is snug on him. Not tight just snug... you can never be too careful when your pup is hanging it's head out the window. At least that's how Apollo LOVES to ride. |

I've got them all - seat, restraints, etc. I NEVER let my dogs ride in the car unrestrained. Here are my thoughts:
The car seat - nice in that dog is up and can easily see out window. My Daisey is at 15lb rattie and it's just at the max of comfort for her. She sits in it and could proably curl up and lay down but doesn't. However, we don't use this much because my husband doesn't think the strap that attaches to the dog's harness is sturdy enough in case of a "real" accident and she would fly into the windshield because she is up hi. It actually fits the evil chihuahua much better and she can easily lie down and sleep it in but she doesn't - she prefers to scream at the top of her lung whenever in a car.
The harness with sherpa is confusing everytime I go to use it. The dogs are so excited to go somewhere that I have a dickens of a time getting it on them. The seat belts slides through it which gives them plenty of room to move about - probably too much considering restriant is the reason for the thing.
What I like better than that fancy harness are the straps you run a seatbelt through and then snap onto the dogs harness. It gives them a little walking room too which might be good, might be bad. They sure can twist that thing around and it takes a minute or two to unwind to undo them.
Actually, I feel most confident when I simply run the seat belt through my dog's regular harness. they can't move much meaning they won't fly anywhere and they can't twist themselves or get stranged on anything. Cheap and easy too.

I think I just got the same seatbelt harness that Jolene has for Apollo...I liked the padded area on it. I haven't tried it out yet (I just got it yesterday), but I did try it on both ratties, and it fit great. Everyone here laughed at me for getting one, but ever since I was in my car accident last month with Molly, I've been afraid to take the dogs anywhere with me...Molly was so scared, but fine, thankfully. I'm sure the ratties won't care too much for the harness, but I want them to be safe. My girls are a little bit too big for most of the car seats/boosters, and the strap that clips onto their harness or collar looks a like it would break in an accident, so I'm sticking to the harness. |

We have safety harnesses and leads for Sydney and Sonic. They hook in the buckles in the car. For Sydney (dont laugh) but because she is smaller then Sonic and my seats sit low, we have a car seat fastened in and use the other buckle for her harness. That way she can look out the window easier or curl up in the seat and sleep. She has enough walking room on the lead that she can also lay down and sleep by Sonic. |

We bought a car seat for Lucy a few years ago and she loves it. Go to www.fidorido.com. The seat itself is restrained by the seatbelt, and the puppy is held in by a harness. It's big enough that it sits her up high enough that she can see out the window. And it's big enough that when my 24-pound angel wants to completely stretch out on her side and go to sleep, she can do that, too. We never go anywhere without it. www.fidorido.com |

I'm really intending to choose a car seat for Daisy before we start going to the lake routinely again. I'll be driving up with her many time by myself this year and would prefer for her not to be on her own in the car with me focusing on the road.
I've been searching ebay and there are some good deals. I'm leaning toward this one:
It's $50.00.

I also found this one (it comes in other styles) and immediately though of Jolene's Emma

| Oh, and right now she has a simple hookup they sell to attach from her harness to the seat belt, but she whines because she can't see ... and it does tangle up easily. I think the one I posted above would work even in the front seat if I slide the seat as far back as possible (because of the air bag). I would still be able to easily reach over and give her a pat on the head or slip her a treat when she's being good and not whining or fussing. It's a 2 hour trip one way, but a bully stick helps. She is more content on the highway than in stop and go traffic. |

| I stick to the good old crates. My guys can lie down and sleep, whatever they want to do. Besides they are used to their crates and if I need it where I am going I have it. |

| I have the SUV Gate that I put up when I take Amos for a ride. It works great. For the longer ride to TN, I used his crate, but it's so big that we had to put the back seat down. He is definately a driving distraction unless he is restrained. He will jump from front to back seat over and over. That's almost 50lbs of dog bouncing around in a car. NOT a good thing! |

I HAVE that seat only in solid BLACK it works great!!! mine is a little smaller though...it was perfect for Caesar when we were in the "pop top"sportcar! now with 4!! we just leave them home...Cash has to have drugs or he throws up the whole time!!!I have a suv too!(I can put the seats down) but they are happy to ride back there in there crates or on a big blanket in the treck across(coast to coast) country they rode there and had there crates opened and they would switch around the whole trip, they never bother'd me sept when they figured it was time to go to a REST STOP! which they love'd!!! california just passed a law this week that they can't ride in your lap! so eventually they will have to be buckled up too!So the crate is going to be the ONLY WAY! |
