my puppy who is 4 months old tends to sit at peoples feet begging for their food.  He eats, but what do i do to teach him to not beg?  I dont want people eating and him at their mouth trying to get their food.  what to do...................

What my brother did with all his German Shepherds is to NEVER, EVER feed them ANYTHING that is not in their food bowl......EVER.  You must however request all family members and visitors abide by this rule.  He swears it works.  If a dog only get food in his bowl, he will soon learn to only expect it there.

Of course, that's a lot easier said than done.  I give my dogs the occasional treat from my hand and in doing so, they have come to "hope" this may be their lucky day.  But they don't jump up for it or beg.  They just sit and hope.

The never beg at the dining room table either, because I NEVER, EVER feed or pet them at table.    Zipper sits quietly under the dining table (hopeing a piece will fall) and Button doesn't even come in there at all during meals.

EDIT:  Forgot to say WELCOME to the forum!

yes, welcome. My dogs can be beggers too if allowed. My husband makes them leave the room if we are eating dinner because he cant stand being stared at while eating. At first they didnt listen when he'd point out of the room and say "OUT". Then he would put them away while we ate (in our utility room...you can also crate him) Now they understand when he says "OUT", they will leave the room.

We crate our dogs during meals. They will pretend to lay down like good children and adore us while we eat but they sneak back in repeatedly. SOOO now we put treats in the kongs and off to the kennel they go.

Our older dog does not beg....but our Ms Daisy the RT sure does.....we look at her and tell her firmly "go lay down" and she'll go and lay down right in her bed.....but it took a few nights of practicing before she got it down. Your pup is young and will catch on.....just start now....that way you aren't trying to break a longtime bad habit..... Good luck with your pup and welcome to the site!
