It's Tacrolimus ointment and pentoxyphillne capsules - both of which have to be compounded for doggies, and then just predisone (which is cheap) Well, she's worth it (I think) and we will just eat cheap for the next two or three months. I'm blessed that I can give her the treatment she needs.

For the Tacrolimus ointment - but you need your vet to write an Rx for it... they SHOULD do it if they understand you're trying to save money. Either that or you can ask if they'd match the price.

http://www.medisave.ca/DrugMoreInfo1921.aspx?OVRAW=Tacrolimus%20ointment%20&OVKEY=tacrolimus%20ointment&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=7355014512&OVKWID=89681811512

For pentoxyphillne or the trade name Trental, here's a link for how much it will cost at various places.

EDIT - that link was one where you had to join to get the info - give me a few minutes to find something better, sorry!!

You may even be able to buy this stuff through your local drug store depending on the strengths you need. Call and ask your vet.

I'm a firm believer in trying to find stuff as cheaply as possible, and my vet understands and has no problem writing me Rx for stuff online if I can find it cheaper. With 6 dogs, I have to save money whenever I can!

Hope this helps!!

I did get it at a local drugstore -- it had to be compounded to make the dosage right for Katie. My vet does not have it at the clinic. Not common usage for dogs. Thanks for the links - I'll check into them for next month.

The things we do for our pets, huh! One year Choo had to have eye surgery and the next year Bonnie had to have radiation therapy for cancer. Needless to say, no vacations or extras those years. But, I would choose my animals over "fun stuff" and vacations any day!

Sue I live in NY, but Barkley is a big dog. We put in to adopt from the New England Old English Rescue....we had adopted from them before, and had a wonderful
dog from them. This one...we still have him. They told us the family decided they didn't want him any more...the Rescuer told us that they put him in the
car and didn't even turn around to look at him leave the driveway. They had a ten year old and I thought at the time what were they teaching the kid. When
we had already fallen in love with the dog I found out he was H/W positive. I think that is the reason why they got rid of him, and probably told the kid that
he was going to die anyway!!

I have pet insurance thru 24 Pet, great company. I haven't had to use it yet, thank god, but am glad to have it. I am not sure if they will cover pre-existing problems (most companies don't). The reason I went with this company is the vet tech (also a friend) at my vet's recommended it. It is one of her benefits at work (great benefit, wonder if I can talk my boss into it, probably not). Anyway they seem like a good company, easy to work with etc. Go online and check them out.

Wow, Jan! My vet did tell me the pantox was expensive but she wasn;t sure how much. I was going to see if it helped with Jack. Those drugs are the same treatment for DLE also. But for that kind of money I would be eating dirt! LOL Keep us posted on how Katie does on it, I am very interested!

Will do. Sam said Mo was starting to get better, so I hope it will help KS. Sarah, I really would put sunsreen on your boy- my b-i-l said to just use childrens sunscreen - 50 - I know he will lick it off his nose, but it may help other areas.

I have been using the kids sunscreen but not a whole lot of difference. His right eye is very watery again and also the stuffy nose is back, I think he just has a lot going on. He is overdue for his Rabies too but I may just have to wait until his immune system calms down, even if it is until Fall. He does lick the SS off his nose but at least it is on his ears.

Yes, Sarah, I would hold off on the rabies -- good idea. It's not like he's out there with a lot of exposure. I sure hate that he is going through so much. I guess they are saying this problem with KS is sort of an autoimmune thing too, but fortunately it just seems to be her ears.

Do you have any links for the vasculitis stuff? I want to look into that too more. I have a call into the vet to talk with her again, but I really want to take him somewhere else as i have really gotten nowhere. I may end up going to the Cornell vet clinic since they have Dermatologists there but I have to find the time to go as it is over an hour away. In the meantime I want to look at more vasculitis stuff as I have researched the H*** out of Lupus and Pemphigus!

When I had Mayfly in to the vet Saturday he said her ear problem is the result of allergies (which in case is fairly severe so I'm thinking she has an immune system problem, too). Anyway, he said something about treating the circulation problem with lasers at some point in the future....I guess her ears don't get enough blood supply?

I was also thinking Jan, did your vet mention  Niacinimide and tetracycline(or doxycycline) ?  These drugs are used just as like Pentoxifylline to increase vascular flow.  Jack was on these and many dogs I have seen on them for similar issues (DLE and SLO) do well.  If they work ,they are much cheaper..... like $10/month for the tetracycline and Niacinimide is bought OTC where ever you get vitamins for like $5 a bottle.  These two used together work well and usually allow for any steroid use to be stopped.  Worth keeping in the back of your head in case she needs to always be on something

Honestly, in my mind, many of the immune system issues are cause by us.  Dogs get vaccinated over and over every year and that over-stimulation of their immune systems causes it to go haywire. An immune system that get stressed so much is bound to be weakened.  I think we see so manny "allergies" now in dogs because of all the vaccinating we do.  JMO, but I really wish vets would get with it and at the very least adopt the 3 year schedule.  We need more research and scientific proof so these vets can understand it.  I really think we would see a lot less issues if this were the case.  And MB, I personally would never vaccinate your pups during a peak allergy time. Their immune systems are already off and you can just stress it more doing so.  A vaccination is for a "healthy" animal as stated by the companies and an animal at the height of allergies isn't really "healthy". Just my 2 cents, I have gotten crazy over this whole vaccination thing

SKipper was vaccinated in September. Mayfly got her rabies in January (low allergy time for her) but none of the other shots. She had gotten her puppy series, then yearly vacs in 2006 and 2007....after which all the allergy crap started up. So next year it will be the 3 year rabies vaccine for her. Not sure whether to vaccinate for the other stuff every other year or every 2 years or what.

Can a moderator split this off for me?

I need your suggestions guys. Last monday and tuesday my boyfriend and I went out of town and a friend watched the dogs for us. They reported that everyone had been great and had no issues. The only strange this is that Clyde had thrown up once just shortly before I have arrived to get them. That night after feeding them their normal dinner Clyde started having the runs. The next two days I fed him strictly Rice and Pumkin. This seemed to help a bit as he wasnt having to go to the bathroom as often but his stools where still soft. Last night I began to notice a bit of red in the stools and they where kind of oily. This morning I found several more of these around the house as he had snuck out of the bedroom and done them at night. This morning my boyfriend called me to report that he has had about 10 more and that they are more red, slightly yellow and again look very oily. Have any of you had experiance with this? We are trying to get him into a vet asap but I am very worried. He has been his usual happy active self and his appetite has not changed. I am pretty good and understanding what to give a dog once I know what they are sick with..but not good with the diagnosing part. Needless to say I am very worried Ironically my boyfriend has been very sick to his stomach all week long too. I might have to take the dog and the boyfriend to the emergency room today.
