Jack is just about 6months now (wow!)  When can I switch him to eating 2 times a day from 3?

He should be ok with it by now. Daisy has pretty much always had to be on a twice a day schedule because we work / go to school.

We feed Max 3 times per day because of his liver.

Is Jack okay now?

He seems good!! I think we will switch now then. It'll just make things easier. I still haven't put any flea meds on him though, kinda waiting as we don't have any problems with them right now and with the kids if I can hold off then I'd feel better, ya know?!

Are rat terrier's to only be feed so many times per day?  I just fill the bowl with a cup and a half of food for the day sometimes two and Izzy just eats when she feels like it?  When i see the bowl is empty i fill it up with another cup and a half of food.  She seems to be eating more now that she is comfortable in her new home though?

Everyone feeds a little differently, it's whatever works for you and your rattie. Puppies just eat more often. I used to free-feed (which is what the way you're feeding is called) but my guys are the Type B, stockier ratties and they started gaining weight so now I just feed a certain amount.

Well, I don't want to free feed due to potty issues, so I started with 3 times a day because he was only 12 weeks and 6lbs when I got him so I felt it was better to split up meals. Now he is eating about 1 cup of food a day, so I suppose I'll just split that in 2 meals. Boy he is going to be scrounging in the afternoon! LOL Maybe that's whne I'll give him his treats.

Maybe i should only feed two times a day.  That could help with her accident issues?  I think i will give that a try when she is feeling better from her scope.  My little Izzy will be getting spoiled big time tonight and the next few days for sure after going through her scope today!! I just can't wait to see her now and give her some hugs!

Most people don't free feed because of potty issues...also the weight thing and feeding at certain times also helps establish your "pack leadership" but for me it was the weight thing.

I don't free feed due to a couple of things: 1.) keeping them on a schedule makes it more predictable when they will have to go #2; and 2.) like MB, said being in control of the food is a good way to establish yourself as pack leader.

I let the boys feed Jack alot of the time too so they also control food. Treats also and he does a very good job listening to them. I think it has helped with the way he interacts with them alot!!
