I adopted Dakota march 17, 2008  from the human society in Ojai, CA they told me he was 7 to 9 months old however when I took him to my Vet they informed me he was over a year old & got a clean bill of health. he's a love of a dog but... when I call him to go outside or want him to come to me for any reason he cowards as if he was been hit/beaten goin into  a fetal position / submission on the floor sometimes wetting himself... how or what can I do to make him feel secure with me... hope there's a solution...wildrose & dakota

Welcome to the site and bless you for adopting a dog in need. Shiloh too cowered like that when I first got her. I suggest you check out the health and training sections here. You'll find lots of good advice. Loves and patience go a long way. It's hard to know what these angels have been through before we took them in, but in time the pup will have new, good, happy memories of a loving home with you

If you want the best seat in the house ... move the dog!

Bless you for adopting!!!! Does he come to you on his own when he wants held or petted? How is his behavior / attitude overall? Do you kneel down when calling him to you or are you standing?

Try keeping a baggie of treats on your person most of the time You can use little dog training treats, or cut up tiny pieces of turkey hot dog, or even little bits of string cheese. When he comes and sits by you and is relaxed and happy, slip him a little treat and tell him he's a good boy. Kneeling when you want him to come may be a little less intimidating to him for now. As he grows in confidence you can gradually raise your body until he's willing to come with you standing.

Hi there and welcome!! Remember time will also help your boy build up his confidence. Both my dogs are rescue and Fred was very insecure when we got him home. WIth patience, love and of course treats you can help your dog build his confidence. Obedience class helped as well, POSITIVE reinforecment of all good things and just ignore what you don't like. Don't coddle to much when he cowers to you or you will reinforce that behavior. Once Dakota knows he is safe and loved his confidence will come around. Good Luck to you!!

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too
